I love the way the left is still referred to as “loony”.

As I assume that it’s due to the alliteration, may I suggest that the right be forever prefixed with the adjective “racist”?

I rather like “rancid right” or “toerag tory”.

Richard, as far as politicians are concerned, I subscribe to the Mr Mackay the prison warden in “Porridge” school of thought, when he said “I am not prejudiced. I regard you all with equal contempt.”

I do not trust any of these people, no matter what colour rosette they pin to their label every four years and try to convince us they care.

Johnson is a ghastly, old Etonian dilettante with an arrogant, born to rule mentality. I cannot abide him.

But I am not naive enough to think my life or anyone else’s will be transformed just because Sir Keir Starmer is in Downing Street.

Ed Davey is an idiot. No one with any sense could possibly think he or anything he says is worth anything.

The main problem with politics is it is tribal. It is no better than football. OK when your own team does it but the end of the world when your opponents do.

Only when these parties are swept away and replaced by parties that actually represent people will we ever see any improvement.

“The main problem with politics is it is tribal. It is no better than football. ”

And getting more tribal all the time.

Twitter is full of in your face political activists resorting to more and more childish chanting and name calling – its like being on some football terraces.

Though I still vote Labour, I’m not dissimilar to CAS, who imo makes a nail on head observation on the Mick Lynch thread.

I don’t like the Tories – it’s the politics of self, with zero desire for a minimum quality of life for all.

    But look at Labour.

Their proposition to the working class was never “socialist.”

It was “vote for us and YOU (not everyone, because few care about everyone) will be better off.”

And they were funded by Unions fighting for the narrow interests of their own members.

Despite all that, up to a third of the working classes vote Tory.

Fast forward to today and that old proposition has been replaced by a bunch of condescending, patronising, holier than thou, puriticanical, nannying mostly ex-career lawyers, many wealthy enough themselves, who think their do gooder social conscience badge elevates them above a Tory – there’s actually a Rizla paper between them and many Conservatives.

Then there’s the crew who have always been around – they’ve had different names, Militant, Momentum, Corbynistas – they’re the scruffy studentesque left wing “intellectuals” who can recite Marx, Lenin and Trotsky but actually are just as out of touch with the working class as Jacob Rees-Mogg and are eternal opposition fodder.

Having been in the Labour Party Young Socialists and done a Law degree at Warwick, I’ve met numerous people from all these groups – and speak from bitter social experience!

An absolute shower they all are on all sides – up their own backsides, think they’re geniuses but wouldn’t actually be sure whether 5/2 is better than 9/4 as the latter has a nine in it.

    Jaded cynical rant over!

    Rather boring old man rants

There are 600 odd MPs and to dismiss them all as self seeking liars is tiresome

Many could earn more and have quieter lives in commerce and even the pubic sector

My local mp is excellent on every level and a charming person too. Maybe some should also recall the eulogies to david amiss and jo Cox from people that actually worked with them and found their work to be exceptional

If the Big Dog does go, who would you see as the ‘best’ option.

Clive reckons there are a number of MPs who are decent people, is that qualification enough for the job?

I know we should always use our vote but I find it more and more difficult to find a party that I could trust to govern the country rather than ensure that they are the party that stays in power.

I am not convinced that PR will solve the problems but I think it might be worth giving it a chance.

‘Maybe some should also recall the eulogies to david amiss and jo Cox from people that actually worked with them and found their work to be exceptional’

It would be nice to hear this at at a time other then when they have been brutally murdered.

I certainly don’t subscribe to the ‘all politicians are the same’ mantra. Good and bad ones exist in all major parties, albeit not in the same proportion. One of the Labour MPs near me is brilliant and I’d have happily voted for him regardless of whether it’s Corbyn, Starmer or anyone else in charge.

Nothing wrong with being left or right wing Glad’, as long as it’s not taken too far.

The far left of the Corbynites were “loony left”.
The far right of the EDL / BNP are “racist”.

I’d rather the former than the latter but they’re both simply wrong.

“I voted Lib Dem tactically in 2010 in the belief they wouldn’t form a coalition with the Tories”.

    —————————

Ooooohhh, that was some bad research on your part, Chezza.

Liberals said before the 2010 election they were for democracy and they’d rather go with the party that got most seats. :rose:

Don’t blame the Liberals, blame the public for not giving Labour enough seats.

    Perfectly put Clive.

Cox and Amiss are a reminder.

There are good and excellent politicians on both sides, probably more good than bad tbh.

Problem politicians have with talking in public is that any deviation from the party line is immediately jumped on by the press as criticism of their own side and blasted out of all proportion.

People think politicians of today as being worse than “when I were a lad”, but truth is there’s far more scrutiny than there was in the 60’s and 70’s.

May surprise many here to know (well, probably won’t surprise but the reason will).

I was once thrown off a politics forum.

When people were saying Jo Cox “deserved” to die and their words were condoning anyone shooting someone with her or similar views, as she was a “traitor”.
Tried to get a quick response from a moderator without success.
Maybe with hindsight I should have waited longer but I contacted the Police.
Police told me I was right to call them and they were sure the offending posts would be removed.
They weren’t, or not the last time I looked…
And according to the forum owner I was apparently a “trouble maker” and banned.

You are right ging. A lot of lazy time serving MPs in the past and would a minister like George brown Get away with his out of control drinking now? And the very talented Reginald maudling was spectacularly lazy. Roy Jenkins was pissed after lunch invariably and although you cite tony benn, he was seen as very untrustworthy by colleagues

Our local mp was toby Jessel and a 24 carat prat. Vince cable and munira wilson were/are huge improvements

The “Benn” I cited Clive, as a good Labour left wing politician was of the Hilary variety, not his sire Tony. :good:
