Santoriney did not get in the race at Wolves, hoping for better luck for Kempton on Monday.

Thanks to Tuffers and Bosranic for the kind words.

Santoriney has injured a tendon whilst working and will now be out of action for several months.

Two horses, under the same ownership, both suffering from tendon strains and out until the new year? The term ‘unfortunate’ would seem to be somewhat of an understatement at the moment.

Will yet another horse be made available now?

Cormack decided to delete the ‘Goldan Jess / Turtle Island filly’ thread (no problem, Corm) and he’s allowed me to post relevant updates on the pair in this thread.

Goldan Jess ran a very creditable second in the Eastwell Selling Hurdle at Leicester this afternoon on ground plenty soft enough.

The horse was due to have a rest after today (it was his seventeenth effort this year), but obviously that could change.

I could be visiting the stables in December and will post an update / photos of the visit.

A slight change of luck it seems. John will probably have more info.

Jess ran a solid 2nd at Leicester going down by a length. He is now entered to step up in trip to 2m3F at Catterick next Wednesday.

Our Turtle Island filly is now ridden away and in training for a spring debut.

I thought now would be a good time to post an update on It Must Be Love.

So far, touch wood, all is well and it’s quite possible she could be seen out at Haydock on the 25th of this month over eight furlongs, or Doncaster the following week over six or seven furlongs, respectively.

I have posted a few photos from my latest visit on March 28th, and also a video, where you will see her working with Jonny Ebeneezer and an unnamed bumper horse.

All did not go to plan, tactically speaking, and even David admitted he got it wrong on Jonny!! It Must Be Love was due to come through at the end, but ‘took the p***’ once she hit the rails. She has been labelled ‘idle’ by one rider – no surprise if you watch the video I posted of her in the stables a few months ago!

    She is a proper character.

I had the pleasure of attending Catterick races to witness the debut of Nightboat To Cairo, one of the other syndicate horses trained by Philip Kirby, who was one of five breakthrough trainers to follow by the Racing Post.

She was very green and trailed home last of the eleven runners. She also occupied the same position since – this time in a thirteen runner field!

There’s no stopping her now!! :D

Seriously, she’s by Turtle Island and his progeny tend to need about two miles-six and soft ground. Her dam won over three miles, if I’m not mistaken, and her full-brother, Lock Mor Lad, has won a PTP over the same distance.

Her two runs to date have been over a sharp two miles on good ground.

If you would like to see photos of the occasion (and one of me in the ‘syndicate’ section) then click on the link below. Many thanks to Simon Smith.

Goldan Jess, who competed on average every three weeks last year, is enjoying a nice holiday and will be out in the summer.

It Must Be Love has been declared to run in the ‘Doncaster Free Press Tony Freeman Conditions Stakes’ at Doncaster tomorrow evening over seven furlongs.

Eight runners have been declared at the overnight stage for the Class 3 event, due off at 19.50.

Hopefully the field will cut up further overnight, with Patrician’s Glory a doubtful runner, and Border Patrol will only take his chance if there is rain.

There is prize money down to sixth position.

This entry is not a reflection of her ability. David thinks that she will be a moderate handicapper at best and will need further, but feels that running her over her optimum trip first time out could set her back.

We anticipated a small field (only three took their chance last year) and the straight course is ideal considering her ‘fragile’ legs. It will be a nice introduction for her and hopefully she can pick up some prize money.

She doesn’t show a great deal at home due her laid back approach, so hopefully the racecourse might wake her up! However, she worked as a lead horse the other week and really stuck her out when challenged.

I anticipate her struggling to keep up after a couple of furlongs, but you never know, she may surprise.

On a personal note, I’m devastated that I will be unable to see her run due to current financial restraints – May will be one of those months when my account will be sucked dry!!

Hopefully, fate will be kinder next time she runs.

I just hope she enjoys the occasion and returns home safe and sound.

I’m not one to publically slag trainers knowing how hard a job it is but I have to say running your filly here was IMO pretty ridiculous. I appreciate you have been waiting a long time to get her on the track and the guaranteed prize money of £279.60 hugely appealing but I can’t see that the filly will have got anything out of this experience except the feeling of utter dejection being beaten a total of 42 lengths. And yes before anyone asks horses do get demoralised being left behind that far. I just can’t see why you would run a horse first time out in a conditions race against 86plus rated horses with experience when you could go for a bog standard Median Auction race at an equally flat track. For me horses need that first run to be a good experience which they enjoy not finishing in the next county. She will have learnt precious little from it except that shes not very fast.

Strange decision I agree with but will probally go handicapping and land a large punt with duck eggs for form

Is it your experience, jinnyj, that they can also get into the habit of not wanting to lead? Would you be doing anything at home to try to restore her confidence?
    Thanks

    A big update…

    It Must Be Love

made her debut in a competitive Class 3 Conditions event in May over seven furlongs. As expected, running over a trip considered well short of her optimum, she finished last of the five runners.

I thought she’d begin to tail-off after a couple of furlongs but, to her credit, albeit pushed along in rear, she kept with them for 3 1/2 / 4 furlongs before the superior class, fitness and experience of the field told. She was allowed to come home in her own time for the final two furlongs.

She’s always been a laid back, if idle, filly and believe me, no harm was done to her confidence. She’s been through a fair bit in her short life and nothing has broken her spirit. The entry was based on a number of afforementioned reasons and, as demonstrated in her second visit to the course, running her in a lesser contest could very well have produced the same resut.

My initial reaction was that, given her right conditions (jockey jumped off and said she needed 12 furlongs and soft ground) she could be competitive at her own level and we expected much more three weeks later at Haydock in a maiden event over ten furlongs on soft ground.

Sadly, she was never happy and trailed home last of the twelve runners, beaten 81L. Given the drop in class, over a more suitable trip, things just didn’t add up and she was examined over the next few days.

She’s always had problems with her legs, which were well documented on these pages, and David (Flood) did an incredible job to get her on the track. I can’t stress enough that her risk of injury was no greater than any other horse that steps foot on a course. She was fit, well and deserved to show us what she was capable of, doing what she was born to do.

John (Edwards) made the decision to retire and rehome It Must Be Love near his home, so he can continue to visit her.

    Now the good news…

After viewing the filly, Oswestry Equestrian Centre decided to take her, where she will be given an initial twelve month holiday before embarking on a more suitable career, when time allows.

I will keep you updated on her progress and I hope to visit her in the near future. The link to OEC is pasted below.

    Now for the news on

    Nightboat To Cairo

    .

She continues to please after her enforced break. She reacting badly to a routine medical procedure, which affected her breathing. The photos below show the amount of improvement she has made since her first two efforts, the most recent of which was taken just before her break – very frustrating at the time because she looked incredible.

She could have a spin on the flat, or go novice hurdling in the next week, ground pending.

Take a look at the last photo on the list taken in November – beautiful.

    Goldan Jess

made a satisfactory debut at Sedgefield last week. He’s improved after a well deserved five month holiday (ran 18 times in 2008) and is better than that effort. He has an attractive handicap mark on the flat, which we hope to take advantage of in the near future.

The main aim with him is the Galway Festival.
