The Irish handicapper has now given State Man a mark (their handicap system is also quicker than ours, all Cheltenham runners updated today) – that mark is 151. Which puts him level with Vauban, raised 6lbs for his Triumph Hurdle win and only 1lb ahead of the leading 2M novice in Ireland, Dysart Dynamo, unchanged on 150.
Sir Gerhard is on 155, The Nice Guy on 153.
April 2, 2022 at 22:24 #1590895In answer to the specific question: Yes.
April 3, 2022 at 00:25 #1590925Not like the year he almost won the UK trainer’s championship….. (but for Vautour falling at aintree, and, I think, Nicholls winning the Scottish Grand National)
April 3, 2022 at 10:48 #1590944I have a slight problem with winning, (or nearly winning) the trainers championship because of success at mainly one meeting.
April 3, 2022 at 11:04 #1590947Bored of Mullins domination English trainer David breaks into Mullins yard holds a gun to his head and demands Willie hands over all his horses to him. Mullins reluctantly agrees but says they’ll be a hour wait for the horsebox’s to arrive
David bored of waiting challenges Willie to a horse race
David – I’m not very good a Jockey. I always lose.
Willie – I’ve got a feeling you’re gonna win this one.
David – I hope not. I don’t like winning. My father used to force me to win at everything I did. But people challenge winners. You become vulnerable, you feel open to attack. Do you know the feeling?
Willie – (Emphatically) Yeah, yeah, I know exactly what you mean.
David – But losers are anonymous. No one wants to challenge a loser. There’s something comforting in defeat. I really like losing.
Willie – (A scheme is being born) Do you? Well, what do you say we make this race a little more interesting? Shall we play for a tenner a Length?
Willie produces his wallet.
David – Alright.
Willie – (Quietly) Got a feeling that this is not going to be a total loss after all.
David – Sorry?
Willie – Nothing. (Surveys the yard) I’ll ride Energumene? Thanks.

This is clearly not Willie Mullins’ opinion and I will take his judgement over an embittered-sounding keyboard warrior any day!!!!!
April 4, 2022 at 17:09 #1591134Opinions make the forum and I guess Ruby Walsh left big boots to fill in the eyes of some.
Hope that doesn’t make me sound like an embittered keyboard warrior!

April 4, 2022 at 18:04 #1591141Please don’t you grow up too, TTC.
They all grow up in the end and I always end up being the only complete and utter child left.
Olympic standard is a commendable aspiration, though.

April 4, 2022 at 18:24 #1591145True. It’s just too easy to be attacked anonymously on the internet by people who are not necessarily the best in their fields.
Paul Townend has been a brilliant jockey for many years and has filled Ruby’s boots rather well. He did ride Mullins’ maiden Gold Cup and Champion Chase winners after all.
It is arguable that any competent jockey could ride Mullins’ winners and you’d be right. However, Willie Mullins tends not to give rides to ordinary jockeys….
And as Jamie Spencer once said; “if you don’t like my riding, don’t back my horses,”
April 4, 2022 at 18:40 #1591148The flip side to that is that if you can’t handle public criticism you shouldn’t take a career operating in the public domain.
And if you don’t like reading that sort of thing, don’t visit Internet forums or read social media.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion and you don’t need to have qualifications to hold an opinion or express it.
It’s called freedom of speech.
I dislike sheer hate online (and off it) as much as anyone else, but people in the public eye must expect flak, it goes with the territory.

I don’t have a problem reading “this sort of thing.” Quite often it amuses me to observe the faux outrage.
I disagreed with an opinion. What’s freedom of speech got to do with it??? People talk freely and disagree with opinions all the time.
Easy to say when one isn’t in the public eye.
April 4, 2022 at 20:33 #1591162As a few here might quite possibly attest, I’ve handled all manner of criticism over many years.
I don’t take it personally, if I’m outspoken I’m fair game.
I think most here with firm opinions feel the same way about themselves.
I don’t actually have a strong view on Paul Townend.
He’s not Ruby Walsh, but then IMO Ruby Walsh wasn’t Tony McCoy.
And Tony McCoy has implied he thinks Ruby Walsh had the edge on him!
And punters will have their view – and the fact they’ve mostly never even ridden a horse doesn’t matter.
Most football fans aren’t much good at football but still have their say.
It’s all differing opinions – it would be a very boring world (and forum) if we all agreed all the time.
That said, there are courteous ways of going about agreeing to disagree, aren’t there?
We don’t need to sneer at those we disagree with.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"April 5, 2022 at 01:46 #1591183John Berry when on the Sunday forum stated jockeys can only make minimal difference to horses chances. Far too much is made of jockeys and Derek fox,Ryan mania and Danny mullins have shown great technique recently but we’re most likely on the best horse on the day. Only judgement of pace to me makes any difference like seamie heffernan showed in the breeders cup on Highland reel. There are loads of cracking Irish jockeys out there and mullins is spoilt for choice but sticks with townend. That’s good enough for me.
April 5, 2022 at 05:36 #1591196Well, there are performance to expectation stats which indicate that, over the course of each season some professional jockeys do better than others (I exclude claimers here).
In the ranks of amateur riders the difference in ability between the best and worst is even more marked.
Jockeyship clearly makes a difference but, at the top end, it’s only marginal on average.
That said yearly averages can mask/dilute individual howlers of a ride or an inspired one.
