Zozo, with my serious head on………..

If the same field lined up today over the same C&D would you back Knowhere @ 1/5? If not, how was he value at 1/5 before yesterday’s race? If so, then I want to lock you in a room and be your bookmaker.

Btw, was Nowhere still value at 16/1 or, did the “value” go once the 20/1 was taken?

Knowhere would have been value at 1/5 let alone 16/1 as it won. A winner is value a loser is not.

Knowhere wouldn’t be value at 1/5 on the action replay!
One of them [b:1zwefoxl]has[/b:1zwefoxl] to get beat one day……….

Yes one of them has to get beat one day. But yesterday was the day that Knowhere would have been value in retrospect at 1/5. If I put £100.00 win on Knowhere at 1/5 then I would have walked away with a profit of £20.00

If you had backed £100 win on any of the other horses at 100/1 then you would have lost £100 regardless of what price you took.

Who got the value in that situation in your opinion? The person who won £20 or the person who lost £100.

One bet was a winner the other was a loser, you can hide behind value all you like, but the person who won £20 is £120 better off than the person who lost.

All bets realistically are based on a persons perception of value pre race. My lays are all based on my opinion that the fav I am laying is underpriced and that I will profit long term this way.

However if any one of my lays wins then my perception of that horse not representing value was clearly wrong and I was mistaken in my judgement of value.

    Zoso,
This is getting quite ridiculous, claiming Nowhere ‘Value’ at 1/5. If your betting strategy is about finding winners, good for you, but you really shouldn’t debate a concept you clearly don’t understand

No I would not back Knowhere if the same field lined up over the same course and distance today then I would not back him at 1/5 (I wont back any horse at 1/5 by the way but that is irrellevant to this arguement).
The reason I would not back him today at 1/5 is because a new factor has just entered the equation. The winner today may be the horse who can take 2 races in consecutive days. It is possible that Knowhere would run flat racing the next day so I would not back him,

If however that race was run again today and Knowhere ended up winning again, then yes Knowhere would have been value in retrospect after the race.

PS – You dont want to be my bookmaker because long term I will cane you good and proper and send you bankrupt. (arrogance an essential ingredient in being a successful punter).

Oh but I do understand it.

WOuld I back Knowhere 1/5 pre race – absolutely not, no way, not even with counterfeit. I would look at that price and think that is ridiculous and I would have to be a layer.

However after the race is finished and Knowhere has ran out a nice winner, then I can say that Knowhere was in fact value at 1/5. He won easily and he won like a 1/5 shot.

Which returns to my original point that too many pundits hide behind the old value line. No value in laying a short price horse that bolts up, no value in backing a big price horse that is unplaced.

Surely it is time this old ‘value’ argument was put to bed. it seems to crop up on the forum at very regular intervals and usually descends into personal insults rather than honest debate. The differences of opinion seem to be more semantics than substance.

Let me attempt a definition of ‘value’ that all parties can agree to.

A value price for any betting proposition is purely subjective and relates to how the parties to a bet perceive the probabilities of each possible outcome to an event, prior to the event taking place or during the event.

The above definition precludes any notion of objectivity in value prices and also makes redundant any arguments about what constituted value after the event.

    Any thoughts?

By saying if I back the value in the long term then I will produce a profit is absolute rubbish

    Alan Potts -Against the Crowd

There is no such thing as A value bet, there is only MY value bet and YOUR value bet, because the recognition of value is personal opinion

The only true measure of MY ability to assess value comes at the end of each season when i close my accounts

The art is to identify horses whose chances of winning are higher than what the layers say they are

If you can do this consistently (see Carvillshill thread in Daily Lays for an example) then like CH and AP you have obtained "value"

I think that "value" threads always seem to go round the same predictable route without reaching a consensus.

Part of the difficulty is that it is important who says "so and so is value", but that is rarely correctly added to the balance. Take two different hypothetical punters, call them ‘Winner’ and ‘Loser’.

‘Winner’ is someone who has consistently made a profit at punting for many years. When he or she says that something is value, even if it is subsequently beaten, it carries the full weight of a tried and tested good judgement. There are very few sure things in life, ‘Winner’ knows that, so if the selection is beaten it has to be seen in the context of the profitable track record as a whole. ‘Winner’ has every reason to believe that the loss will be more than compensated for in due course.

On the other hand, if ‘Loser’ says that something is good value, you have to factor into the equation that the statement is this time being made by someone who has a track record of bad judgement, that is why he or she is called ‘Loser’, it therefore carries much less weight.

Both may be equally confident in their assertions, but ‘Winner’ ends up with the money long-term.

Mr Potts sounds shrewd and has said what I meant, but has nailed it in a few simple to understand sentences.

I have Waqaar as being poor value in the 2:30 kempton today at 4/6 or shorter and I will be laying him.
If Waqaar hacks up then my judgement that he is too short was wrong and I have not layed value, I have simply made a poor decision and bad judgement. I will be perfectly happy with my lay either way though as I was happy for the reasons for laying the horse beforehand (if I wasnt I wouldnt have layed him) but I will not be able to claim that the lay was a good value lay.

If the concept of value didn’t exist in anything that involves money, then we could do away with money.

Every punter believes he is backing or laying value though, even the muggiest of mugdom betting shop punter.

The end results over a period of time are the defining factor of whether you really did play at value or not though.

Your welcome Alan. I must say I liked the way you put it, I had a look through the celebrity Q&A section you did also and liked your answers, especially this one as it rings a bell with me:

All the successful punters I know share three characteristics –

1 – unshakeable self confidence, to the point of arrogance

I have only ever bought one racing book in my life and I doubt I could ever buy a better one in an entire lifetime, but I may even consider buying one of your books now. (Not trying to be a brown noser but genuinely might).

    Zoso,

Won’t benefit me as the publisher went into liquidation seven years ago and I haven’t had a penny since.

You can find quite a bit of the text at zero cost by looking on Google books, and clearly that’s the best value!

Posting a list of bets on here is the worst kind of aftertiming. The small sample of your "value" bets we’ve had the privilege to share on here before the event have been uninspiring to say the least.
From your list of bets you are the next Messiah in punting terms but pardon me for being sceptical- if you can post in the Lays and Plays before the event with similar success for a month or two, I will gladly kneel before your eminence then……
