Any possibility of Peddlars Cross returning to his homeland for this???
I’ve heard that the Haydock Park meet is in doubt.
Not a chance, I’d say Imp.
With 26k for what looks a virtual walk-over, no inspection until the morning of the race, forecast of 6 degrees, and only about an hour’s travel, Haydock looks nailed on, imo.January 20, 2011 at 18:43 #336886It looks like Leopardstown might be frosted over on Sunday, in which case it’s conceivable (but unlikely) that Peddlers Cross and Dunguib might turn up for the postponed meeting.

Personally I think O’Connell’s a decent enough jockey. His 2 wins from 161 does not really tell the whole story imo. Looking at just his last 12 mounts 9 of them have been relative no hopers priced at 20/1 or bigger. He doesn’t seem to be getting the chances.
I do agree that a more experienced jockey may well have won on Dunguib last year however.
The fact other yards aren’t using the guy says it all really.
Hard as it may seem get te guy off and put BarryG on board…Dunguib has the engine but he needs someone with magic hands who can get present him at his hurdles with perfection.
If not then they should either draw him a map or tie his head to Binocular’s tail and don’t let go until the 2nd last
January 23, 2011 at 14:54 #337374Much more satisfactory performance than the farce at xmas. All stringed out all over south dublin.
Class!

Hurricane Fly is clearly the best two-miler in Ireland, but why Davy Russell insisted on riding Solwhit for a turn of foot bemuses me; did he really think he had a chance when still behind the winner at the second-last?

The only time he beat HF he came from behind after the last in the Morgiana.
January 23, 2011 at 15:08 #337382Imperial…i like this Ci Cetait Vrai in the next. Backed it at naas when it fell and looked like he was going to win from along way out.
January 23, 2011 at 15:10 #337383I don’t think he’s as good as First Lieutenant so I’d be surprised if he beat the Shark’s horse.
I like Ballyhaunis at the prices. Think he might do these for speed on this better ground.
January 23, 2011 at 15:15 #337385Hidden Cyclone is on a mighty drift from 6/4 on bf out to nearly 9/4.
Ballyhaunis for me just is not good enough.
Can’t say that about the the Gigginstown Horse who is well backed
January 23, 2011 at 15:36 #337392Hurricane Fly beats Solwhit senseless yet again. No surprise there, then !
However, I will be opposing the Mullins horse come Cheltenham. He won’t last up that hill, in my humble opinion.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
January 23, 2011 at 16:18 #337395The fact that Vola La Vadette and Sublimity where beaten half the track is a good sign for the form. Beating the county hurdle winner 5 and bit lengths is very professional performance

You got to be kidding "H". Too much emphasis put on the Cheltenham hill…..It’s the pace they go that beats horses that have a lack of stamina at the Festival the hill just puts the final nail in the coffin. Kelso and Carlisle are much stiffer hills.
Starluck flew up the Hill because there was no pace on early in a race he won there, but he was completely gone by the time they got to the last in the CH last year.
The fact Hurricane Fly stays 2m4f standing on his head and travels like a dream in his races he should fly up the hill……unless of course he can’t go Champion Hurdle pace but that is highly unlikely.
The only worry I have is he’s bit too carfely when jumping. He travels so well in these soft ground races in Ireland that he baloons his hurdles slightly. There’s always those sudden injections of pace in the Champion Hurdle and lose a length or two doing that at a crucial time and it could prove very costly.
However he is a good jumper if not brilliant so it’s minor and may not be a worry with faster pace, better ground and hopefully Ruby on board.

I disagree Ruby, I don’t know why they ran Vola La Vadette thing wasn’t off a yard and looked like it was in training for things to come. As far as Sublimity goes he will go down in history as the poorest Champion Hurdle winner fo all time and beating him is no sort of boost at all.
Hurricane Fly looked as if he’s improved since his last run the way he skipped clear of Solwhit was more impresssive and more clinical than it was the last time. Solwhit and Thousand Star’s finishing positions would indicate that he’s imroved again.
I think it’s safe to say two things. In the right company he’ll improve even further as he was once again only ridden to beat what was there. Pretty sure had they gone 1/2 a stride faster they still would have got him off the bridle he still have beat them the same distance.
And the other thing? AP will be a worried man after that performance
January 23, 2011 at 17:31 #337403H. Fly seems a bit injury prone to me. Apparently he cut his leg recently and he had injury problems before that. Quite a dangerous ante post bet I would say. Also his form is hard to determine because Solwhit is not very good. But maybe worth a go on the S James special each way 4 place offer if it is still going.

I was thinking the same thing during the race although it’s probably not Davy Russell’s decision to make.
I know what you mean it would seem sensible to try and force the pace and take the sting out of his tale but Hurricane Fly himslef is better with a goog gallop, Solwhit is always held up, isn’t a natural front runner and would play right into HF’s hands by going on.
Quite frankly I don’t think he had a hope in hell today no matter which way you cut it. He’s simply different class.
