It’s on Rebecca Curtis’s site that Irish Cavalier is no longer with us. Was hoping that no news was good news, and that he’d recover from his injury. It goes from bad to worse at the moment. RIP

December 29, 2017 at 20:15 #1334842Very sad news, Moe. I hope they tried their very best to save him and that he didn’t suffer too much.
What a stupid coincidence – given the horrible spell he is enduring now – that Paul Townend was the last jockey to ride him.Rest In Peace Irish Cavalier!

December 29, 2017 at 21:07 #1334856This week has gone from bad to worse, loved this horse.
RIP Irish Cavalier
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...December 29, 2017 at 22:04 #1334870Aaaaww man, A hard one to take, and one of my favourites.
Such a cracking horse, and his wins at Punchestown and Wetherby were particular highlights. He didn’t get near enough credit for his win in The Charlie Hall, and it was sadly overshadowed by the lame excuses for some of his more illustrious rivals.
I just hope he didn’t suffer too much.
December 29, 2017 at 22:24 #1334877Irish Cav was the horse that first grabbed my attetion to horse racing and what a tough soul he was
December 29, 2017 at 23:02 #1334889Heart sank when I saw his name here. I really liked him and foolishly thought it was long enough after his injury for him to be out of the woods. What a nice horse. Commiserations to the Curtis stable.

I was glad that Townend got him pulled up quickly so at least he had a chance. Think the fracture repair went well at the time so assume he got laminitis or the metalwork failed or got infected or something. Such a pity.
December 30, 2017 at 16:15 #1335046Details have been updated now …
Rebecca Curtis has reflected on the life of her stable’s long-time flagbearer Irish Cavalier, who has lost his life after suffering complications linked to the broken leg he sustained in the summer. The 2015 Cheltenham Festival winner, who enjoyed his biggest success when beating Menorah, Cue Card and Blaklion in last year’s Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby, was injured during a race at Newton Abbot in June.
Curtis said: “He recovered from the broken leg but he was so long cross-tied that he may have suffered damaged vertebrae in the neck. One of the vertebrae may have become inflamed and started to touch the spinal cord. He had started falling over and seemed to be suffering from neurological problems.”
