I really feel he’s O’Brien’s 3yo to follow this season, even if he doesn’t win today.
I feel exactly the same. Regardless of what Steinbeck does today he is a horse to follow for this season from the O’Brien yard..
May 22, 2010 at 14:50 #296485That Canford Cliffs doesn’t stay, does he?
One word: EASY!!
May 22, 2010 at 14:52 #296486Absolutely hacked up. Steinbeck was only getting going late in the day and he’ll be alot sharper next time out.

Congrats to the Hannon camp and Richard Hughes. A superb effort. Canford Cliffs everything they said he was.
Now for Ascot. SJP is shaping up as very nice race.

Been watching this thread since last week hoping someone would put a word in for Canford Cliffs. Just didn’t see the sense in me harping on about him again so I thought I’ll let him do the talking.
Such a pity he wasn’t quite at his best in the Newmarket 2000 guineas but he’s put the record straight.
He settled really well and Hughsie had so much horse under him he could put him just where he wanted to be and not a hint of his old tearaway tactics.
Could be the St Jame’s Palace next but the way he setttled and stayed on Richard Hannon might be wishing he had entered him for the Eclipse instead of the July Cup over half that trip
Took a while to repay my confidence but well worth waiting for…Brilliant performance and well done the Hannon machine!!!

You’re loathsome condemnation of anyone and everyone is becoming tiresome, Mr Wilson. We can’t all be as brilliant as you (though it has to be said that others are at least willing to offer their opinions BEFORE a race).
As for Canford Cliffs, he’s done that very, very easily. I’d still be tempted to try him over six furlongs – anything resembling a fast pace and he’ll be unbeatable -but the Newmarket form certainly reads well and the two french colts look to be top class.
May 22, 2010 at 16:10 #296498I wonder if Canford Cliffs and Paco Boy will lock horns later in the season, or will Richard Hannon keep them apart?
Wouldn’t it be great to see them challenge the likes of Rip Van Winkle and Goldikova, not forgetting Makfi and, on line through Dick Turpin, Lope De Vega and, who knows, Special Duty.
The Sussex could be a cracking contest. Of course, the majority of the aforementioned stars are versatile regarding trip and it’s highly unlikely they will all turn up on the day.
As I forecast in my original post on this thread, Ballydoyle would set the race up for Canford Cliffs. Thinking they could possibly run the speed out of him was slightly naive. The winner has the mentality of a sprinter – he wants to go out there and get the job done as quickly as possible – and by setting a fast pace they allowed the colt to cruise along and finish them off with his lethal turn of foot.
The St James’ Palace Stakes is shaping up into a titanic battle. Richard Hannon will send both Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin for the contest and Makfi will also travel over.
May 22, 2010 at 16:15 #296499As I said in the 2000 Guineas thread, CC should be aimed at the Breeders Cup Classic, he is as good as Ravens Pass at this stage of his career and has so much speed yet stays well.

May 22, 2010 at 16:53 #296501Newmarket form well and truly solidified there with Canford Cliffs franking the form nicely, will be nice to see Makfi and Canford Cliffs do battle once again, Makfi could be something since he won his Guineas pretty easy and Canford Cliffs then destroys the Irish field.
One weaknote was how many disappointments they were today, the likes of Xtension and Steinbeck should not be losing to the likes of Free Judgement.
May 22, 2010 at 17:06 #296502Jim Bolger’s horses are flying atm though RedRiot, so I wouldn’t let Free Judgements finishing position put me off the form too much. He was only 6 lengths off Steinbeck in the Dewhurst. And Bolger’s well able produce an unfancied horse for the big day, such as Gile Na Greine in the English 1000.
May 22, 2010 at 17:09 #296504Stunning from Canford, really was. Disappointing to see the other market principles disappointing very badly but Canford Cliffs clearly does stay a mile now. He’s an absolute freak of a horse.
May 22, 2010 at 17:11 #296505very impressive, looked very classy, looking forward to see how the from compares with the older generation. Very confident ride
May 22, 2010 at 18:23 #296511I thought Viscount Nelson ran a cracker, looking forward to him stepping up in trip, believe he will go for the French Derby.

Delighted to see him win, though not too sure what he’s beaten – couldn’t have done it much better though.
Always thought he’d stay 1m until his Newmarket run (and quite clearly said so, both after Deauville and the Greenham ), so his Guinea’s defeat is even more of a mystery now. THe noises coming from the Hannon yard still suggest he’s some way in front of Dick Turpin, and on today’s showing, they may well be right.May 22, 2010 at 20:06 #296516Easily Canfords most accomplished performance to date, and looked a real pro.
Settled almost instantly, travelled beautifully and then put daylight between himself and the rest; visually impressive, but feel he’ll fall some way short against his elders this year. He gives me the impression that he’ll be inconsistent and earn the ‘enigmatic’ tag at some stage…. The Hannons deserved this.

I’m not sold on Makfi being some sort of wonder horse……..One hit wonder perhaps? but that was a different horse we saw today than we saw at Newmarket.
Be amazed if either Mafki or Dick Turpin get anyhwere near him if they meet again.
Form students will be quick to note the improvement Canford Cliffs showed in beating Xtension nearly twice as far as Makfi did. That alone would justify someone thinking he can reverse Newmarket form with Makfi but it was more the way he won than the distance he won by that caught the eye.
I’d be ultra confident of a reversal and would love them to make Mafki favourite but I doubt if that will be the case.
