This is the most prestigious 7f handicap of the year with near on a £100k to the winner and its no surprise horses are laid out for it.Charles Bishop fluffed his lines in the Victoria Cup over course and distance back in May so Mick Channon gave Richard Hughes the mount of this years winner Lincoln a feel for the horse at Newmarket 4 weeks ago.If ever there was a more blatant Non-Trier that day then I’ve not seen it.Having witnessed ‘Lincolns’ unlucky run behind his bigest danger ‘Speculative Bid’ in the Victoria Cup it was no surprise to see Hughsey protect his horses mark at Newmarket,he could have won that day no problem but a 1/3rd of this weekends prize money and a 5lb rise obviously wasn’t the plan.I actually thought connections would target the Bunbury Cup for £75k but missing that for this only confirms to me that this has been a long term target.Hughsey has plenty horse to settle on saturday but he’s a sharp turn of foot and the draw should suit.On 3lb better terms with his Victoria cup adversary ‘Speculative Bid’ and twice the price at 16/1 now, though 20/1 has been freely available I’m expecting a big run from the Channon horse, admittedly he comes 2nd more than he wins but a place wouldn’t be the worse result at current odds.
July 25, 2015 at 01:20 #1141972I’m still unsure why Speculative Bid missed the Bunbury Cup. Everything seemed primed for him to go close there. He was 12/1 early here but I wanted to make sure he was running this time and his odds are prohibitive given the going doubts.
Donncha appeals to me as an improver coming in at the top of his game. He is 2/3 at 7f, has won on soft ground and over a mile.
Bushcraft will surely find his stamina stretched if it’s really soft, as his form is at 6f and he has to be opposed for that reason despite his string of wins.
Donncha each-way at 12/1 looks the sensible call and I would agree that Lincoln makes a good each-way case as another who won’t mind the ground and he’s drawn on the other side.
Donncha for me
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
