Returning to light work.
Going to be walked out, and everything taken steady to start off with. But he has had an x-ray and they have come back clear.
Great news, would be great to see him back, but I really, really hope there isn’t another ‘Istabraq’ type occurance at the festival, if he gets there.

He certainly doesn’t owe anyone anything, and retirement wouldn’t be greeted begrudgingly, but he’s hardly a pensioner by racing standards and I think connections are to be applauded for trying to keep him in training (assuming that doing so poses no additional risk to his overall health).
If an Istabraq-esque incident is even the remotest possibility (over and above the norm) then the decision should be taken to let him enjoy his pipe and slippers.
January 14, 2009 at 21:06 #203955I don’t neccessarily think it is great news. Its great news that all is fine obviously but surely this horse has done enough to deserve his retirement now?
I personally don’t want to see him labouring behind horses not once fit to nail his hooves on.
January 14, 2009 at 21:19 #203958The request for cortisone is obviously a ‘patch him up and run him at all costs’ attitude.

If connections can get him genuinely fit, Ian, then there is surely no problem. If, on the other hand, they’re masking the problem for the sake of running him then it’s reprehensible.

So often sports people don’t know when to quit there’s always another race, another fight, another game etc
Joe Calzaghe has been thinking about retiring for some time as he wants to retire where all greats should – at the top. Its the same with Inglis Drever. He’s won 3 World Hurdles how much more do connections want from him? He’s not going to get any better now is he there’s only one way for him to go and thats downwards.
I think people find it difficult to admit to themselves when the time is right to say enough is enough, I think the Drever is at that stage now.
January 15, 2009 at 00:14 #203987Quite right, give him the retirement he deserves and let him spend his days leading the young guns up the gallops and giving his lass Ginny a few days out in the open fields having a hack.
I hate to see top class horses going down the decline route, Take Beef or Salmon carrying top weight in the Irish National or my old fave Suny Bay doing top weight in a Warwick Hurdle.
Ingles should be aloud to put his hooves up and be paraded in Newcastle as the only athelte trained in the area to have won trophies more than the entire Newcastle United team altogether.
January 15, 2009 at 00:32 #203991Don’t want to be contaversial. All I want to do is point out the obvious.
If Inglis was going to be retitred he wouldn’t be doing any work light or otherwise.
It’s approximately 8 weeks until the Festival and they will be all out to run him there as Aintree simply isn’t his course.
Will he make it? Can’t see any reason why not and if they give out a good report he’ll be 6 or 7/1 for the World Hurdle before you can say Supercalifragilistic expialidocious!!!
Then what? Niky’s horse looks special and what a test he will have if Inglis Drever takes him on.
Hope it happens
January 15, 2009 at 11:32 #204039I agree, Fists.
Bottom line is that connections won’t risk his life. He’ll only run if 100%.
HJ considered retirement after Cheltenham last year and, win or lose, I think March will be his final outing and it would’ve been regardless of injury.
Like I said in another thread, if he goes to Cheltenham in great shape they have nothing to lose.
I’d rather see the old warrior go out swinging, not retiring on his stall.
This isn’t about what the horse ‘deserves’. Any horse, regardless of abilty, owes nothing to anyone. If the horse enjoys racing, retains plenty of ability and is healthy enough to compete then let him run.
You’d think by some of the comments that he was a 12YO struggling to find some form. He clearly has the ability and still enjoys the game.
As for his chances of a fourth title. He loves Cheltenham and goes very well fresh. He’d still be the one they all have to beat.
One last round, Inglis, one last round.
January 21, 2009 at 17:10 #205550Inglis Drever has been retired.
Have a great retirement, Inglis.
Thanks for all the memories!!!
January 21, 2009 at 17:44 #205557A fine decision befitting a fine horse. He will be missed however.
Last year’s victory was one of THE great Cheltenham memories IMO.
Off to YouTube for another watch I think.

January 21, 2009 at 18:06 #205560My favourite jumps horse ever. Happy retirement, although I still maintain he would have won this years renewal!
Can someone post the youtube link of last year’s victory if its available please.
January 21, 2009 at 18:12 #205563Sadly looks like another YouTube purge victim DM. Can’t find it.

January 21, 2009 at 18:30 #205569Bye Inglis Drever.
Have a good retirement.
January 21, 2009 at 18:40 #205570I’m glad that he has been retired and hope he has the long happy retirement that he deserves.
Is there any more news on Bewleys Berry also owned by the same connections and how he is progressing since breaking down last year?January 21, 2009 at 19:00 #205577Inglis Drever, what a horse. I done my money when he couldn’t reel in Fundamentalist at his first Festival, but ever since then he has never let me down. Correct me if I am wrong, but how did a horse of his class manage to win 2 of his 3 world hurdles at odds of 5-1 (First and Second world hurdle crowns)! His first was the biggest each way steal of all time as he only had Bracouda to beat…and he was getting old!
January 21, 2009 at 23:29 #205627happy to hear this, im glad i got to see him in action
