I can’t recall anything as dramatic as the winning margins in the 6f 2yo opener at Ayr today.

On ground given as good to soft a field of five took part in a class four maiden.

The winner won by nine lengths with a further eleven lengths back to the favourite, Jungle Cat, trained by Mark Johnston in third and then there was six lengths to the fourth and 4 and a half lengths to the 5th.

The following race, over the same trip was won by a head.

Any theories on the Pony Express winning margins? Was it just a rare case of five horses with very different abilities meeting? Has anyone seen something similar previously?

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Think the ground was soft at Ayr yesterday more so than it was good to soft.

Two year olds have only just started racing at 6f and I simply would say the trio that lagged in behind got very tired with a combination of soft ground and being stretched at 6f. They were barely walking over the line.

Poolstock showed up well for a long way to two out but once he was asked for an effort he got tired quickly.

You could be right, there could just a wide variance in ability but I do suspect The Wow Signal could be a nice colt.

Noticeable also, that in the two divisions of the proceeding 6f handicaps both the winning horses had previous winning form over 7f, which, for me suggests stamina was important even at that distance.

Thanks TBR, It just seemed to me that I was watching the Supreme Novices at Cheltenham, rather than a 6f flat race.

The Wow Signal may well go some way to living up to his name on that evidence.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

It did seem that way, Steve. It is rare to see them so badly strung out at 6f.

Though, if there is any place we will see it, it is Ayr!

It might be worth noting that, despite the huge winning and place distances, the second and third horses in this race have won since, by six lengths and two lengths respectively. Last week Jungle Cat floored a Richard Hannon 8/15 hotpot at Goodwood and Doc Charm won by six lengths on the bit at Ayr today.

Nine length winner The Wow Signal has been introduced to the betting for the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and been backed into as low as 12/1.

Remember where you read it first :D

Looking like a very good maiden, Steve. Doc Charm sauntered up yesterday, do not suspect he beat much but very impressive to the eye.

I was quite impressed by Jungle Cat the other day, showed the two Hannon horses the way home very tidily, neither looked short on ability. The 2nd home is a half brother to Graphic and the 3rd came into it with a fair level of form.

The Wow Signal is looking like an exciting prospect.

The Wow Signal is by first season sire Starspangledbanner, who has made a remarkable start, with four winners from his first six runners.

The others are Anthem Alexander (Edward Lynam in Ireland), Moonraker (Mick Channon) and Effusive (William Haggas).

I suspect we’ll see most of those next week at Ascot.

The Wow Signal was purchased by Al Shaqab racing along with the filly Harry’s Dancer. They are both running at Royal Ascot next week. The Wow Signal has been put in as low as 6/1 for the Coventry and I can’t recall an Ayr maiden winner at those odds for the Royal meeting

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this post. I thought Starspangledbanner turned out to be a Jaffa at stud and went back to racing? I am assuming he has now reverted to stud duties?

Do you happen to know where it might be possible to see a list of his progeny for this season?

    Thank you.

Wow Indeed, I don’t know what Jimbo McGrath was wittering about regarding not knowing what his maiden form was worth considering both second and third had hosed in since and Cunningham managed to mention Jungle Cat’s form being boosted without thinking that the fact The Wow Signal had thrashed him earlier might have been worth a mention.

Everyone wants to bang this horse’s drum now but you heard it here first, before the experts were out of their beds! :D

In the know on TRF

They barely mentioned The Wow Signal after on RUK, well, not as they would if it was a Hannon or O’Brien winner.

    Well done, Mr Caution!

Only question was how was it allowed to start at that price! The form line was bursting at the seams with winners and it looked the best value of the day, and possibly of the week.

Doc Charm is being aimed at the July Stakes.

Might be worth a glance at Al Rayaan and Poolstock, ‘the other two in that maiden’ who have yet to re-appear. Blackfoot Brave’s staying on second to Doc Charm might be a significant performance.

It wasn’t Jim McGrath’s finest hour today, even after the Wow Signal had won he maintained that the horse had only beaten what was there and that we didn’t know how good it was. Horses beaten that far in maidens rarely win, far less hose up next time.

Later on Jim was negative about Kingman, fretting about the bandages, as he had done before the Greenham and you would have thought the horse was made of porcelain. A few minutes later the horse pi55ed up and you had to wonder what all the bluster was about.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Saw another by Starspangledbanner at Salisbury yesterday, a strong, deep chested colt called Francis Scott Key, trained by Brian Meehan and much the best looker in the maiden races on the card.

He didn’t look fully fit or comfortable on the firm ground, but can be expected to improve greatly on this modest debut given time and a softer surface.
