Those within the marketing and communications area of horse racing in Britain need to become far more innovative. Where a competitive market exists one has to step back and differentiate. Not enough of this been done and far too much of an emphasis on marketing racing as a betting medium.
Admittedly, the levy is the largest source of revenue but as the sixth largest industry in Britain surely far more oppertunities exist, or existed in fact?
November 21, 2007 at 18:47 #126174to be fair the annual mebers fee for leafy is 300 , you get about 125 meetings plus reciprocals , so its not bad value for money
besides its the best kept secret in racing during the winter
so lets not knock it too much
Ricky
life is far too short , lets have fun
November 21, 2007 at 19:48 #126182Improved TV coverage is definitely the biggie for attracting newer audiences. C4 generally and the Morning Line in particular has become the Scoop6 Show. It is hard work striking the balance between giving knowledgable viewers the information they want, and de-mystifying the jargon for newcomers, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try. I agree with whoever it was who said there should be some emphasis on personalities; okay, we don’t want it to become like the BBC’s 2007 Derby coverage (Frankie won the Derby you know! And by the way, there was a horse involved too) but maybe the TV equivalent of the RP’s Jockey Shorts column, or a feature on famous silks and what’s involved with registering new ones; behind-the-scenes tours of the stewards’ room/racecourse stables etc; updates on famous horses who have retired from racing. And, more importantly than any of that, good quality coverage of the racing itself – detailed cards for ALL races, shots of ALL the runners in the paddock, a glimpse of at least the market principals going down to the start.
November 21, 2007 at 20:51 #126187Ricky, you are a true connoisseur – the value of the season gets you in every meeting for the price of a cup of coffee if you can go to all of them and one of my favourite days at lingfield was a snowy january day when i was told i would not get to the course due to the blizzards but when i got there, easily, enjoyed an almost deserted racecourse with all facilities seemingly there just for me and it was a fine sight watching the horses race in snow – excellent day
November 21, 2007 at 22:13 #1261881. Entrance fees – The price to get into some racecourses to see low class races is ridiculous and must put alot of people off. When you see the entrance fees to Longchamp for the Arc you wonder why our fees are so high in comparison.
2. TV Coverage – Agreeing with what almost everyone else is saying, tv coverage must be made better. The BBC has dropped several meetings now over the last few years. It was watching their coverage several years ago that first got me interested in racing, so less and less tv coverage is only going to result in bringing fewer and fewer young people into the sport.
November 21, 2007 at 22:18 #126189Flat racing on the turf all year.
November 21, 2007 at 22:31 #126190I also agree that Flat racing should be turfed all year.

November 22, 2007 at 14:17 #126264How about also working in conjunction with the press to make the published cards more appealing?
Not an issue for us RP readers(and too many of the above posts have completely missed the point by bringing up anorak issues) but the casual punter isnt perhaps best served by what he reads.
Ive always thought that stronger coverage of a decent weekday card would be a very fair excahnge for dropping some rubbish fixture
Even if this goes slightly down the route of advertorials, it could all help spread the interest

But the idea is to have as many races as possible with as many sponsors as possible in the limited time they have. Not likely to change.
Shouldn’t be betting in every race anyway unless you have a death wish and want to end up pennyless.
December 1, 2007 at 13:54 #128141does anyone think it is possible to exercise some greater form of control in getting the races off on time ?
