Is Doncasters still going? Am I right in thinking that the dry ski slope actually ended on the main road going out of Oldham? if so, probably safer to ski off piste…..I used to work above the Allied Irish Bank in Manchester, and we quite often left work only to find that the bank had been evacuated because of a bomb scare, but no one had bothered to tell us. That was after I’d been sacked from my job at Eccles Labour Exchange….

It didn’t clear Oldham Road by much, that’s for sure! I’d actually counter that the top end of the slope was the scarier, backing up as it did against Counthill School…

Doncasters’ four Sheffield works are still going strong though I’ve no idea about Moorside; they’ve several others dotted around the UK

I grew up in Steel City, dear dirty old town

Ooh! Slightly confused now. The Moorside I was refering to is an area of Oldham, not a firm, and it is definitely that part of the town that housed the ski slope (which was directly opposite Moorside Garage, down the road from Moorside Hardware, etc etc). There was a metal firm (half-) called Moorside in Moorside, then, was there? How very apposite if so.

Doncasters Moorside was further up the road from the ski slope going out towards Saddleworth Moor [ski slope on right, Doncasters on left]. This was 35 years ago so memory a bit vague, but in a strange senility sort of was getting clearer – heck….have also just been to see play at village hall about women transported to Australia after being involved in the Peterloo riot and smashing up their weaving looms [Levellers???]…

Ah, right. Yep, that still counts as Moorside as far as the junction with the road up to Strinesdale (an unlovely estate rebranded as "Pennine Meadows" in the 1980s fooling nobody – you can’t polish poop, you know).

I’m back up that way in three weeks’ time – I’ll mention your name to anyone native I meet over the age of 40 and see how many tremble in fear at it.

Yes thats correct, friend sof ours have actually been given a couple of x race horses from there for free. When they have small injuries they often palm them off so to speak…

My friends horse was told she would be unable to ride him for at least 3 years, now 1 year later the horse is fine! A nice result. :D

    Thanks for warm welcome anyways!

I am a new member and wanted to introduce myself. I have been ‘lurking’ on this site for about 6 months and finally become a RF member.

My name is Jon, I’m 27 and I’m from Liverpool. I am a keen racehorse fan, my preference is for NH but I enjoy the bigger flat meetings.

I am a big AP fan, but also follow A Coleman, B Geraghty and S Thomas.
As for trainers, I like Venetia, N Henderson and E Lavelle.

On the flat, I tend to follow C Catlin, T Durcan and R Moore, with trainers H Cecil, Sir M Stoute and J Gosden.

My favourite horse of all time is Dancing Brave, followed closely by Denman.

Look forward to meeting you all!
