Must be going back 25-30 years. I did ask this on another thread but does anyone know the connection between the Marinopoulos family and George Cambanis?
For those who don’t go back that far Mr Cambanis owned Stilvi and the five successive Group winners she produced. All were trained by Bruce Hobbs and included the Irish Derby winner Tyrnavos.
May 30, 2009 at 21:09 #231132The Marinopoulos breeding operation is still called Stilvi Compania Financiera, as it was when Stilvi herself was producing; my understanding is that Leonidas Marinopoulos married into the family and now runs the operation, especially as Mrs Marinopoulos officially owns Ialysos and runs in the colours made famous by the Cambanis runners.
May 30, 2009 at 23:10 #231154Who were the rest of them Stivli? Been trying to think of them but they’re not even on the tip of my tongue.
May 30, 2009 at 23:13 #231155Tolmi, Tachypous, Tromos…
May 30, 2009 at 23:18 #231158Stilvi produced Tachypous, Tromos, Tyrnavos & Tolmi as well as five other individual winners.
May 31, 2009 at 00:18 #231171Thanks Rory. Taxiarchos is the missing one taking the Land Of Burns when it was a Group 3. He was a rare Pattern winner for Brigadier Gerard.
This was the list I compiled before I turned my attentions more to National Hunt pedigrees:-
1974: TACHYPOUS (Hotfoot)
1975: TAXIARCHOS (Brigadier Gerard)
1976: TROMOS (Busted)
1977: TYRNAVOS (Blakeney)
1978: TOLMI (Great Nephew)
1979: TENEA (Reform)
1980: ?
1981: TELIOS (Mill Reef)
1982: TANAGREA (Blakeney)
1983: TANAOS (Grundy)
1984: TRIKYMIA (Final Straw)
1985: TILEFOS (Shirley Heights)
1986: TOXITIS (Pharly)Interesting that she did not revisit stallions. I think the once-raced Tenea was sold to Robert Sangster for a then record price for a broodmare.
May 31, 2009 at 00:21 #231173Quite a list. Did any of her daughters produce anything of note?

(GR), 1 race at 3 years, 2003 in France and placed twice.May 31, 2009 at 01:54 #231189Past 12 months in HK have shown that the Marinopoulos / Stilvi name on the owner or breeder line is very good reason in itself to look closely at a runner.
Last spring, via the French-based Spanish trainer Laffon-Parias, his BALIUS sprung an 83/1 second place behind Archipenko in the HK QE II. Subsequently sold to Godolphin.
This spring, via Luca Cumani, his PRESVIS won the HK QE II.
Then, via Cumani, he manages today’s result in a listed at Haydock with a horse who seems only ever to have won dirt races in Greece.
Seems very much to know what he’s doing.
Did he have some history also with Gary Tanaka horses?
May 31, 2009 at 02:08 #231193Did he have some history also with Gary Tanaka horses?
He shared ownership of Lockinge winner Keltos with Tanaka.
May 31, 2009 at 16:28 #231246Returning to Stilvi can’t add too much to above although it is probably worth mentioning that Tenea produced Taos to Sadlers Wells. He was a listed winner at two who subsequently went on to win over hurdles.
Just to put a little flesh on the bones Stilvi’s full record was:-
1113-1212
She only once raced beyond five furlongs and probably her two most noteworthy ‘scalps’ were Sallust (the subsequent Champion miler) in the National Stakes and Deep Diver (Champion sprinter) in the King George Stakes. By todays standards she would have been Group 1 class.
In her ‘missing’ breeding year she was barren to Bustino.
Mr Cambanis died in 1981.
May 31, 2009 at 18:49 #231257Just to conclude the grand dam of Ialysos is Trikymia.
June 20, 2009 at 13:09 #235433Interesting piece in today’s Racing Post about the stud, including a photo of Ialysos’s dam and her 2009 foal.
June 20, 2009 at 13:54 #235453Yes, two page feature. I suspect I am probably ‘one of the middle-aged people’ referred to as sending e-mails. Hopefully, he can run a decent race today and progress through the season.
