While they are perfectly entitled to send their horses to any trainer of their preference, is it just me that feels the optics of this don’t sit right.
There are a number of UK duel-purpose trainers who they could have sent them to, rather than send the horse to the top trainer in Ireland. BTW, absolutely nothing against Willie Mullins, just the principle.
Amusing to see the photo of Warren in the article showing him promoting British racing with the ‘Great British Bonus’, while advising horses to go to Ireland to be trained.
May 14, 2025 at 20:02 #1730321When they are just Mr and Mrs Windsor nobody will be bothered where their horses are trained. As long as they are funded by British taxpayers they ought to be supporting British businesses.
May 14, 2025 at 20:16 #1730325Took me aback when I read about it today to be honest.
May 14, 2025 at 20:31 #1730328They have Gilded Water in Australia at moment and had a few out there , I suppose it’s slightly different as he won’t be racing against British trainers any time soon as opposed to Mullins one who may be and King is still head of state as well .
They have done ok with ones they sent out , Chalk Stream was good but got bit moody in end , Gilded Water has won two and been runner up in the other .May 14, 2025 at 22:58 #1730336I don’t have a problem with it. No one asks why a major British based racing operation such as Cheveley Park Stud has all its National Hunt horses trained in Ireland rather than supporting British trainers.
Times change. Not so long ago, the late Queen never had any runners in Ireland and her mares were never sent to Irish stallions because of the Articles 2 and 3 of the Republic of Ireland’s constitution which claimed Northern Ireland as part of its territory.
The fact that the British monarch is now having a horse trained in Ireland is a change for the better and I welcome it.
May 14, 2025 at 23:18 #1730337Maktoums head Dubai and have kept Newmarket going for years , Mullins best trainer so can see reasoning behind it.
May 15, 2025 at 01:20 #1730342Cheveley is a little different to the Royal Family though Cork, they don’t have the same ‘relationship’ with the UK as Chuck and Cams.
Are there no suitable dual-purpose trainers in the UK that could get the best out of the horse…….or any more than Willie Mullins, as good as he is?
May 15, 2025 at 02:20 #1730345Looks like sort horse Alan King might have done well with if they targeting some those handicaps/distance races at Royal Ascot
May 15, 2025 at 03:52 #1730346“Cheveley is a little different to the Royal Family”.
I recognise that but it has emphasised its British roots before. Its colours are not red, white and blue by accident. And it is a far larger operation than the Royal bloodstock.
I am not sure how many horses the King and Queen have in training but the late Queen used to have something like 30. Assuming it is the same amount now, is 1 horse being trained in Ireland such a problem?
If they had decided to make Mullins their main trainer, then perhaps it might have been an issue. But their main trainer retired last year and I don’t have an issue with them moving 1 of the horses to Mullins.
If memory serves, I am sure the late Queen had the occasional horse trained in America without anyone suggesting it was wrong.
May 15, 2025 at 05:23 #1730348Wouldn’t Henderson normally get this type of horse …. I’m guessing those running the day to day operations can see his decline like the rest of us
May 15, 2025 at 05:34 #1730349I suspect this is more down to the Queen meeting Mullins and just goes to prove the aura surrounding the man. There was a hint the King would slowly move away from racing after his mother passed and again I suspect the Queen has had some say in this and whilst the operation may not be as big it is still good for racing.
The more I know the less I understand.
