I agree with Lingfield that reading connections comments carefully is often underrated. Too easily sneered at by conspiracy theortists and so on

Not much to add other than with so many factors involved an open mind is far more important than obsessing over one factor whilst missing another glaringly obvious element

Specialisation is not just about races but also stables too.

Dunno about anyone else but I seem to find it more difficult to make it pay over jumps than on the flat.

I think most people will probably have the opposite problem?

The coming jumps season for me will be about research rather than attempting to make a profit, I’m not ready for it over jumps. On the flat I’m overall pretty healthy.

Really EC, you have a better chance of getting a rugby player to admit he wears womens underwear then getting dovout punters to admit to being losers. :) Give up now

In the beginning, it was writ that no man may put a horse to race over open ground, but he must place many obstacles in the animal’s path, such as twigs, logs, fences, tractors and soforth.

Last year I got a multiple bet up in February and picked up just over £1K. Within three weeks I was sat on the beach in Spain and the cash was done. If I could do that every year I would be happy. I suppose being realistic helps me cope with having a miserable existence.
Well theres your problem…a complete lack of culture :)

turnover of 10k a week ? – i turned over 10k on a saturday and made about 350, another 5 days profits but i was still down after one bad day for the month – there are a million and one ways to skin a dog and my first rule with racing is never rule anything out forever. that said it is fookin hard work and 99% of punters must still lose. therefore i have to say you can’t put any rules on it but some people i know do make a profit – to do it regularly though, each year, each week, constantly though is rarer than rocking horse s**t
. if anyone here says they make regular but small profits you would have to ask why aren’t they making regular but bigger profits – it ain’t rocket science

My philosophy for betting is to try and find and treat each race as a puzzle and try to be objective as possible. This is a thing that I find most difficult to do as I tend to be prejudiced towards certain horses therefore giving a distorted view. I like to try and find an edge in the formbook not always obvious to a casual look. Above all else though I try and enjoy form study because as soon as it becomes a chore I find the focus has gone. When fully focused I find there is no better pleasure – time stands still and perception is heighted. It may not bring winners but it is fun trying………richard

If you keep to betfair 100% they provide a complete record of your profit/loss this shows at a glance what type of bets (if any) tend to be the most profitable.
I print off the p/l every day without fail and file these away.
I never bet ‘in running’ due to the time delay from atr and ruk.

I have atr and ruk in my office and a v fast p.c which always helps and a ntl broadband connection. I buy the Racing Post and The Sportsman every day and all this costs me around £130 a month thats just about £4.30 a day.

From the past 3 months betfair accounts I have laid 106 horses and they included the Barry Hills maiden which was 1/7 on (and got beat).
Out of the 106 bets just 27 won and the biggest single lost was £870.00 the overall profit after commision for the period was £3,765.56. The prices laid were as short as 1/7 and the biggest was 4.60 (18/5)
In the same time I backed a total of 64 horses and I never exceed 5% of my bank on any selection.
There were a total of 20 winners but as none were odds on the overall profit after commission was £465.43.

Over 60% were on the summer nat hunt as thats where I normally fare best at.

I dont bet in any Irish racing or greyhounds etc etc.

The only any post bet I have had this season was Ryan Moore to be champion jockey but I did that at the start of the last 2 seasons.

When finding horses to oppose or to back I look for many variables.
(1) trainers current form and form at the track in question.
(2) course and distance.
(3) jockey stats
(4) days since last run.
(5) going
(6) market moves
(7) horses moving up in grade normally interest me more than those dropping down in grade.
The jockey I have laid the most has been A.P. Mc Coy as although he his by far the best his rides are so overbet normally and he has said in the past many start as favourite just because he rides them.

My betfair commision rate is currently stuck on 3% and this helps considerably as opposed to 5.0%.
Every time my partner is watching programes such as ‘Love Island or Big Brother’ I am re reading the Racing Post and The Sportsman or so it seems to her.

Overall its a full time occupation and the only time I have been racing this year was to the Goodwood festival meeting as the Xpenses are so high.

The last losing month was May where nothing seemed to go right. I dropped over 3k that month but Cheltenham festival was good mainly due to Nicky Hendersons Handicap chasers.

To sum it up overall its long hours and very boring at times but I remember the days when there was betting tax and no exchanges and overall now punters have never had it so easy.
