i go to about 25-30 of the top jump meetings half at cheltenham as im an annual member,go mainly to ascot, aintree, newbury ,kempton and sandown.
used to got to haydock but have vowed to myself never to go there again as the new chase track as a joke.January 28, 2009 at 00:05 #206806If anyone goes racing regularly without being a member, they should become a member of The Racegoers Club. Costs £20 a year to get in to most race meetings at least £3 cheaper.

Value Is EverythingJanuary 28, 2009 at 05:15 #206860Try to get to Bangor, Chester, Haydock and Aintree at least once or twice each a year.
Guess where I’m from
Also try and take in a new course if I’m on holiday.

January 29, 2009 at 03:39 #206966uncanny Paul, how did you know that
January 29, 2009 at 05:26 #206981Managed my first 40-meeting year last year (15 point-to-points, 22 NH and 3 f-f-f-f-f-f-fllll… you know, the other stuff ), and would be hopeful of something similar this year.
I’ve already been knocked back by the weather twice (Sandown and Tweseldown) and work commitments twice more (Larkhill and Great Leighs), but I know that’s still small beer compared to poor old Paul’s litany of woe. Plus the two I
have
got to, Cheltenham and Ampton, were very nice indeed, ta for asking.
The plan is to get to the first ever North Carlton point-to-point this Sunday, but the Arctic forecast doesn’t augur well. Meh! But racing I want and I racing I shall blimmin’ well have, even if that means an about-turn and trip to Wadebridge…
Oh, as for the betting side of things? Exclusively Betfair before I leave the house for Rules meetings, and only on-course for points if a) I’m not race-reading, and b) I’ve had a look at the form beforehand. If North Carlton goes ahead, I may just have a little dabble on some or all of Kjetil, Menchikov, Pleasure Shared and Father Owen.

January 29, 2009 at 05:55 #206983Go as often as I can but with my work situation not looking good I’m probably going to have a (hopefully) brief sabbatical soon.
Was in Ireland last weekend for Navan & Leopardstown and weather permitting hope to be at Towcester today.
There’s a Plumpton meet coming up in a couple of weeks time that I may go to but other than that not a lot at the moment.
Would like to start visit a few more of the Irish tracks having done all the UK tracks.
Think it’ll be a while before the opportunity will arise to visit Ffos Las.January 29, 2009 at 16:44 #207018Was going to Wincanton today on a Goodwood reciprocal. But the racing looks so uncompetitive does not seem worth the trip. The best quality race is down to two runners with a 1/14 fav. Poor response by trainers, shame on them. Probably more than one other odds-on favourite. Had two bets last night on the racing, one Speed Bonnie Boat is a non-runner. Thought it would be with a 7lb conditional rider "on board". Am on Dastardly Dick who I make a 5/2 chance in the 3:10 but not worth going just for that even on a freebie.
Wincanton have done their best to get racing on, not their fault, just one of those things.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 30, 2009 at 01:29 #207085Sorry to hear that Grey desire. Same here sadly.
I have gone more fequently since dropping football from the agenda and would say i go 20 times a year. More jumps than flat. Living in SW london is perfect for good racing and about now, its possible to go to a decent meeting every weekend that is within easy reach
There is still the buzz of "being there" as well as just being in the open air for an afternoon. I agree with the paddock watching advantage too
I never bet every race (sometimes a few as 2/3) and barely drink (excpet for two particular days out ). I like the social element too
If you are used to premiership prices, the cost doesnt seem prohibitive at all.
January 30, 2009 at 03:38 #207123Its hard to leave betfair and the racing channels behind. My racing year is usually 2 days at Tramore,Gowran Park on Thyestes Day,one day of Punchestown,a couple of days at Leopardstown or the Curragh and the Paddy Power meeting at the Curagh. This year I am going to try and make it to Cork and Kilbeggan for the first time.
January 30, 2009 at 13:30 #207160It was bloody cold at Wincanton yesterday,as Shadow Leader will confirm.
It didn’t look the best of cards but I was committed to going.
James De Vassy, who won the novice hurdle, could be useful. Big and green in the paddock, on his hurdling debut, he showed greenness in the race, wandering about as he approached the hurdles. However, after he looked to have to ‘give best’ to the favourite, Princeful (who is another grand type), he fought back well to win quite nicely. Had a quick word with Nick Williams, his trainer, he described him as a "good horse" but was surprised that the horse had been so well-backed (12/1 in the RP, 7s available on course, SP 11/4).
There was a very close three-way photo for the handicap hurdle at 3.10. Which the judge called very quickly, bare in mind the distances were ‘a nose’ and ‘a nose’, and not everybody was convinced that he had called it right. It seems that the Hobbs team, in particular, were ‘not ‘appy’.
