Make that 14 winners since last Friday and 22 winners in the last 12 days. The man is just different gravy, surely?
July 9, 2010 at 13:51 #305632Another Winner.
The guy is a freak
July 9, 2010 at 13:58 #305635As great as the form he’s in, he has certainly been given the ammunition of late too.
Richard Fahey deserves a mention! There are very few better IMO.

Boo Yaaa
Some Jock
July 19, 2010 at 15:36 #307275what price is he now 3s on?
July 19, 2010 at 18:01 #307310He is only human however. Even the great Hanagan couldn’t coax home Donal Nolan’s first winner since 18 hundred and frozen to death!

I must say Ive always liked him, never thought of him as anything special but perhaps the key to being a truly great jockey is not making mistakes, and to be honest I dont think Ive ever seen Hannigan make a mistake, obviously hes only human but his errors certainly are few and far between.
Consistancy seems to be the key with him whereas with the likes of Spencer and Moore they can be simply outstanding in the saddle one moment and then put in just as many bad efforts.
It would be great for a northern based jockey to win it.
July 27, 2010 at 13:05 #309074It’s weeks like this where Paul Hanagan will struggle for winners and Ryan Moore can close the gap a little IMO.
August 6, 2010 at 19:46 #311370Hats off, this fella was on a different planet tonight.
Had a bet in every race at Musselburgh and didn’t back him once. Different gear those rides.

Nice to see so may people behind him on here.
The fact PH is a 2nd class citizen (Northern Jockey) has led to this question being asked in the first place (Without malice of course)……The guy is has it all, plain and simple and if he was riding for someone like SMS this question would probably not have been asked.
I guess the easiet answer has to be:- good enough to kick all their asses and win the Championship which makes him the best out there at the moment, if the championship means anything.

If Hanagan does win, as begins to seem very likely, there will be additional pressures to bring the Jockey’s Championship into line with the other two by making it dependent on
prize money
rather than
races
won.
On that basis Ryan Moore is over £1M clear of Richard Hughes, followed by Queally, Dettori, Murtagh and Fallon in that order. Hanagan is only 7th, a whisker ahead of Jamie Spencer. Michael Hills and William Buick round out the top ten.
A fairer system? I for one begin to wonder…
August 7, 2010 at 15:52 #311506Why not two titles one for money and one for races won? In the NH would Mccoy still win every year based on money rather than races?

No. 2009-10 was McCoy’s first win on a money basis for years, since 2005-6 in fact.
Ruby Walsh won in 2008-9, with APM 2nd.
Timmy Murphy won in 2007-8, with APM only 6th.
Ruby Walsh won in 2006-7, with APM 2nd.It’s a split decision as to whether you believe these "championships" should be skewed in favour of a handful of valuable races, or a pile of mediocre ones.
August 7, 2010 at 16:43 #311525That must answer the question since McCoy was still the best jockey even when he came in sixth to Timmy Murphy was he not?

Most would have said Ruby Walsh was that particular year. But that’s rather my point: neither system tells us who the "best jockey" is, because that is simply a subjective phrase which cannot be proved one way or another.
It’s like trying to say who is "best politician" or "best transvestite": simply a matter of opinion, unless you take a vote on it and abide by majority decision. And who takes any notice of
that
?!
August 7, 2010 at 17:13 #311535Some would say that Frankie and Kieren are the best and they have won nothing lately based on either standard. So I suppose you are right.

Backed him at a big price for the jockey championship (only had a tenner). Have been backing him blind in a lot of races over the last few weeks and I’m able to use this site from a laptop instead of my smartphone as a result, so regardless what happens I hope he gets well soon.
Cheers Paul.
