I remember watching this guy a few years back and he wasn’t really doing much.
But last season and now this season this guy has to be one of the most improved riders in these Isles. Obviously R Fahey helps but he has ridden 2 cracking rides the past few days. La Fazzini( the listed race at Haydock?) and a 2yr old race at Carisle. Supreme efforts from different position’s and Horses(held up and from the front)
The more regular viewers of English Racing must have picked up this guy as a future Champion.
May 31, 2010 at 13:41 #297751Best northern based jockey at the moment and
possibly a future champion, don’t think he’s anywhere
near as good as Moore at the moment though.May 31, 2010 at 14:05 #297752Okay obviously Ryan Moore is "The Man" for the Jockeys but the improvement this jockey has made in the past few years is alot

Hannigan is a good jockey however I doubt very much he will ever come close to champion jockey.
In terms of his ride today at Carlisle being above average, well not really. Look at the facts. It was basically a two runner race and he was on the 2nd fav.
The race itself reflected the market and he won in a photo beating the Johnson horse who was given an equally good ride.
He won and got the job done but hardly think a maiden which contained only two realistic winners shows off any Champion jockey standard of ability.
May 31, 2010 at 14:40 #297758Joncol i realise it was a nothing race as such.
But we dont need to look back to Saturday and non-effort on Maiden Horses. I liked the way he didn’t give up and gave the horse a few whacks with the whip to get him just up on the line.
His ride at Haydock though was fantastic piece of judgement from the front on heavy ground

Yes I would 100% agree with you about his ride Saturday.
In reference to your comments on how he didn’t give up and gave the horse a few whacks – Is that not a given for every jockey and more so a reflection of how bad many other jockeys are rather how a good a jockey is???
Once again I do think he is a good jockey but I do feel that making a case for a ride because he didn’t give up and used his whip highlights the poor standard of jockeys that Hannigan is up against rather than good riding itself.
Surely every jockey should never give up and use their whip – In reality we know this doesnt happen, shamefull really.

But sure how many times does Spencer mess up but yet people seem to think he is talented. At the end of the day in any sport – FORM IS TEMPORARY CLASS IS PERMANENT, Spencer is not a good jockey as if he was he would be consiStant, you cant have moment of brilliance (which granted he does) and then have several complete howlers.
It just seems to me that great rides are often hailed as such for simply doing things that we really should expect from every single jockey when riding, sometimes the very basics.
It amazes me when jockeys are sometimes praised on the flat for giving a horse a very straight forward winning ride on the basis that "Manys a jockey would/could have messed that up". Again thats not a sign of a good jockey, its a sign of many bad jockeys there are.
You don’t praise a footballer for taking a throw in do you?????

Hanagan is as good a jockey as most punters could hope for day in day out. They all need some luck along the way though. La Fazzini probably gets beaten a half length if the runner up got a decent run from half way including a decent check about three out.
Good to see Jack Mitchell make the most of some fairly limited opportunities of late.
Ahh another winner on Silvanus right on cue.
May 31, 2010 at 15:45 #297773I think Hangan is certainly good and i wouldnt be put off him riding any given horse.
However i would not go so far as to say he is great and would certainly not bracket him with Moore and Fallon.

July 2, 2010 at 20:11 #304231Top Class Rider.
One of the best in Europe Now
July 2, 2010 at 21:24 #304236He’s ruddy rubbish. Worst jockey ever. Couldn’t win if all the other horses had three legs.
Yours sincerely,
Anthony’s Pocket
