Buccaneer (1857, by Wild Dayrell) had an important influence on the early German / Austrian-Hungarian tb-breeds. He won the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. Happened that in 1861?

Their is a horse named Kaffir Chief, who did quite well in early 20th century big English handicap-races (f. e. winner of the Lincolnshire). Can somebody tell me who his sire and dam were?

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Bit taxing for a Sunday morning, this!

Buccaneer indeed won the Royal Hunt Cup in 1861, from Pretendant and Baron Munchausen. It was part of a Royal Ascot double for him that year – he had already won the opening Trial Stakes on the first day.

Kaffir Chief took a bit more finding (someone’s nicked my Lincoln Handicap book). He was foaled in 1902, by Raeburn out of Ingonda (foaled 1886) by Charibert.

    Hope that helps!

    Thank’s a lot – this is more than I’ve expected! :D

Sorry for the difficulty of these questions – but meanwhile most of the easy questions I’m able to answer myself.

Seems, that you have access to good authorities – would you mind answering my questions from time to time?

I got the information, that until the 1930ties it was possible to run horses with anonymous names in races under Jockey Club rules?

Dark Ronald should have run as an "Anonymous" in 2 races as a 3yo in the autumn after he had recovered from his breakdown.

Is there anybody to confirm this – thank you for your assistance!

Horses could run unnamed as 2-y-os, when they’d be referred to as the "So-and-so colt", where So-and-so was the name of the colt’s dam. Once a horse was named, he couldn’t be "unnamed", although the name could be changed. The Queen Mother’s fine chaser, Game Spirit, was originally called Rum Prancer, as I remember.

Dark Ronald was always called Dark Ronald.

Thank you – but this is not the case I got information of.

I could not believe it – horses should be allowed to race as "Anonymous" under JC rules till the 1930ties.
