I know
March 12, 2024 at 15:32 #1684929Wasn’t he ridden by Keagan Kirby at home or at least one of his favourite horses?
May he rest in peace.
March 12, 2024 at 15:58 #1684956He lead the funeral parade for Keagan Kirby, obviously the loss of Keagan is sadder but HH is awful news. Just hope he didn’t suffer.
P.S Apparently it’s heart failure rather than the course, so one of those tragedy that could have happened anywhere, even in a field galloping with no-ones, before the ban racing group grabs the attention.

RIP Highland Hunter

I think that fewer horses die on a field galloping whenever they want to instead after running almost three miles at full speed and jumping obstacles. If horses’ hearts would be that weak, they shouldn’t be running at all…..
March 12, 2024 at 16:24 #1684978Papers are already spouting guff about him being PTS after a ‘horrific fall’ so if they can’t even get those basic facts right, I doubt there’s much hope of placating the anti racing lobby 🙄
March 12, 2024 at 16:26 #1684981Just heartbreaking for the horse and all concerned rip Highland Hunter. Saw him pull up after leading them round but then itv said sadly he had gone down, knew it wouldn’t be good news

March 12, 2024 at 18:20 #1685036It does happen ERL just nobody reports it, at least to the public.

But you can give them to the birds and bees.March 12, 2024 at 18:33 #1685041Neil, I know what you mean. Remember Brindisi Breeze got loose during his summer vacation and was hit by a lorry which sadly ended his life. I was just trying to say that heart attacks don’t happen that easily, but of course they’re part of equine lives and death causes.
March 12, 2024 at 19:01 #1685048It seems clear that he suffered some sort of heart issue but his death keeps being reported as a “fatal injury”. I suppose a heart attack is an injury and I imagine they may not want to confirm it without evidence but it seems rather misleading. Extreme animal rights activists can’t be reasoned with and would still blame the sport if Highland Hunter had died peacefully in his stable this evening. Plenty of rational people with genuine concerns about horse welfare will be confused and disturbed by the lack of clarity though.
March 12, 2024 at 19:06 #1685051Ed Chamberlin said a “fatal injury” on ITV which I thought was odd. I assumed the death was heart-related, unless the horse incurred a serious injury when making a mistake early in the race.
I know it won’t change the sad outcome, but agree that the more clarity there is in these situations the better.
March 12, 2024 at 19:19 #1685057RP has this a report:
“Highland Hunter suffered a cardiovascular collapse after having pulled up before the second last fence. Incidences of this in racing are very rare – approximately 0.03 per cent of runners. As is always the case steps will be taken to look into what caused the incident, including a post-mortem being arranged for the horse.”
Tragic news, so poignant seeing the photos of him leading the funeral procession for Keagan.
So sorry for all connections of the horse.RIP Highland Hunter
March 12, 2024 at 21:27 #1685093I watched the race with some trepidation – it was a weird feeling – he was bowling along up at the front and did some lovely jumps … when he faded I sort of breathed a sigh of relief thinking he was OK … when the news came I was completely devastated for all the connections and family of Keagan … what a handsome horse Highland Hunter was. There’s a lovely short video of him on Facebook bucking away loose in the field …
March 12, 2024 at 23:11 #1685130Do horses die of broken hearts?
I remember a few days before Henry Cecil’s funeral Thomas Chippendale suffered a massive heart attack after winning his race. They are so sensitive to illness and suffering perhaps they also feel loss.It has been such a sad day to come home and see his name here. So beautiful he gave his all today and our racing world will be the sadder without him in it.😢
RIP Beautiful boy
