Thomas Alexander Waugh (1915-1999) was part of a racing dynasty.

His father and elder brother also trained with some success. He was also cousin to Frank and Fred Butters.

Was that elder brother Jack Waugh? Mark Prescott’s mentor and incumbent at Heath House before him

    Enjoyable thread, thanks all

Wasn’t the Harwood Stud Blagrave owned that which housed the mighty Gainsborough, and which was taken on by the the late Maktoum Al Maktoum after Blagrave died, and named after the great triple crown winner?

Correct. I’ve managed to cull this obituary from the Times Archive, so apologies for the poor quality!

Mr Herbert Blagrave who died on July 4, held the unusual distinction during his long connexion with the British Turf of having bred his own horses, trained and raced them. This he did on an ambitious scale. Born at Cheltenham in 1899, he rode with modest success in point-to-points before taldng out a licence to train in 1928. Meanwhile he acquired stables at The Grange, Beckhampton, near Marlborough, and followed this up during the Second World War when he bought the famous Harwood Stud at Wool- ton Hill in Berkshire. That was where Lady James Douglas’s 1918 Triple Crown winner Gainsborough once stood and where he is -buried’ Atout Maitre, Tudor Mfinstrel, and Match m are other well known sires which at various times graced the 100 acres of pad- docks. He also become owner of the Mount Prospect Stud in co Kildare. Most of his top class mares were bought from his friend, the French racehorse owner/ breeder and theatre magnate, Leon Volterra. His two best known sires, the own brothers Match HI and Reliance, were also purchased across the Channel from Francois Dupre’s stud in Normandy. When the former winner of Ascot’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1954, died two years later at Harwood, he was replaced by the dual French classic winner Reliance. Salisbury was one of his favourite racecourses and he and his wife, Gwen, sponsored a 1,000 handicap there in 1963. Although his ambition was to win a classic race, the nearest he came to doing so was when Chinese Cracker finished second in the 1951 Oaks. Ascot, however, provided him with happier memories- He bred Supertello, the 1950 Gold Cup winner, and he won three Royal Hunt cups wsith Couvert (1938) and Master Vote (1947-48 ) as well as many other prizes at the Royal meetings. At Kempton Park his home- bred Antiquarian won the Great Jubilee Handicap in successive years (1965-66) before being sold as a sire to Poland, while Penny Hill, Royal Chief, and Red Brigand gave him three victories in the Rosebery Stakes. He was very much an all-round sportsman, a fine shot, no mean golfer, and in his younger days a useful cricketer and footballer. In keeping vith these wide sporting interests he was a member of the MCC and a director of Southampton Foot- ball Club.

    Yes it was.

Jack Alfred James Waugh retired at the end of the 1970 season and sold Heath House to Sir Mark.
George Duffield served his time with Waugh before linking up with Prescott.
