Lisa Hancock, chief executive of the Injured Jockeys Fund, issued an upbeat bulletin on Sunday evening, confirming the rider was no longer unconscious.

She said: “He’s had a much more comfortable day and has regained consciousness which is fantastic news.

“The doctors are pleased with his progress.”
