I see Haydock has finally, after about 16mm of rain since last Sunday got to Good/Soft (Soft in Places).
Is that really credible? Must have quite some drainage.

November 20, 2013 at 11:28 #459102Haydock going descriptions are normally works of fiction from the warped mind of the clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright.
Since I started speed handicapping, not once have I been able to work out the going allowance from Haydock, without putting in a lot of thought, time and effort

Every meeting, he seems to change something, and I have no doubt he has a surprise for me when the jumps racing starts, I heard something about him running races on the flat course, this I would believe

The positive thing I could take out of this, is that I could do my PHD thesis in speed handicapping from Haydock Park, realistically writing a book on Quantum Physics would be a lot easier

You might think that I am bias towards Kirkland Tellwright, and you would be right…
November 20, 2013 at 13:11 #459111All the chases at the coming two day meeting will indeed be run on the flat track, or as the inimitable Tellwrong puts it in the relevant press release:
"The chases will be run on the footprint of the inner flat track"
And the hurdle races will be run on the chase track, just to add to the confusion. Thus all the race distances have been changed from previous renewals.
The reason is drainage work on the hurdle track which hasn’t allowed the grass to grow back, or to use the exact words from the press release:
"a sensible precaution to allow the sward in the drained areas a better chance to establish"
November 20, 2013 at 15:13 #459117With the only rain forecast between now and race time a shower at around 8:00pm tonight… It should firm up a bit. But whether the current official "good-soft" can be believed? …. knows!
Usually we can time the first races at the meeting and compare with Racing Post Standard Times. Changes to the course makes that impossible. Will need to judge it on how they’re finishing on Friday. Apart from a couple of ante-post bets on the Betfair – will concentrate betting on Ascot.
Value Is EverythingNovember 23, 2013 at 16:37 #459553So according to Tellwrong, the distance this year is an extra furlong more than usual, the official going is soft (same as last year), but Cue Card goes round in a time 13 seconds faster than Silviniaco Conti did last year.
To misquote a well known politician – I will never believe anything he tells me ever again.
November 28, 2013 at 13:12 #460069Connections were persuaded to run Bobs Worth in the Betfair due to the added stamina needed.
Was Mr. Tellwrong’s distance and going fairy tales a deliberate attempt to mislead connections of top horses?
Does Mr. Tellwrong have complete contempt for punters?
Why does Mr. Tellwrong still have a job?
Are there ever any repercussions for Clerks who (intentionally or not) consistantly mislead the public?
This bloke is a joke.

back to normal, races being run on the correct courses and over the right distances, it just a case of heads down and work out the speed figures

Straight away I see that
Kirkland Tellwright
official going description of
soft
is way off the mark, I have the going at
+0.10s/f
(good), this was obvious when at
0.00s/f
, the winners of every race had speed figures of around
100+
, this has to be one of the very few NH meetings that I have ever rated, where all the races looked to have been true run
