http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horser … acing.htmlAt Goodwood this week, Findlay contacted me to reply to several questions I had posed about reports of his betting and racing activities.First, he confirmed that he had secured a line of credit to gamble on Betfair, although this was through an association with fellow punter and owner Tony Bloom.
Secondly, Findlay claimed that BHA investigators had permitted him to lay horses in stables in which he had horses trained, although this has been denied by the BHA.
Findlay also confirmed that quotes attributed to trainer Paul Nicholls in Racing Post in support of Findlay had been submitted by a third source and had been published without any checking with the trainer.
Findlay told me: "I’ve lost £2.5m gambling on racing, but I’ve won £11.5m on other sports. Sometimes, I’ve been in positions where I had to win £800,000 just to pay my monthly bills."
Meanwhile, Nicholls is understood to have ended his association with Racing Post.

I thought he was a big punter……..Losing 2.5 million would have been a good week for Terry Ramsden and Kerry Packer would have tossed him for the 11 million
Pretty poor show by the racing post accepting quotes through a 3rd party without checking with their client Paul Nichols…bet you there was some smoke coming out of his ears over that.
Thanks for posting the update and no offence meant, but Harry Findlay and what he does is about as exciting as watching paint dry.
August 10, 2010 at 08:11 #311964It’s not boring because it’s a comedy of errors now. What kind of newspaper is the RP nowadays that they happily print made up quotes from the Champion Trainer! Millington’s account of all this should be inetresting.
Didn’t Findlay ahve a falling out with Bloom who is another of Harry’s business partners who he split from on good terms.
The Betfair Credit siruation is good news for us all as anyone with say £5K + on regular deposit should ask for credit now.
Oh and fair play to McGrath who get’s hammered for his commentating but he has nailed a whopper here in a few short paragraphs.
August 10, 2010 at 08:31 #311968I’m gutted that Nicholls won’t be writing in the Post any more. His column was really insightful into his Saturday runners. The paper will be the poorer for its absence.

Celeb quotes are frequently made by PR reps or agents. This allows the celeb to pocket the money without doing any work and also allows them to say, "I never said that" when the quote in question subsequently turns out to be embarrassing in some way.
I’m not saying that’s what happened in this case, nor that the RP emerges with any credit over its coverage of the Findlay story in general, but they are entitled to the benefit of the doubt in this particular aspect.

You’ll just be going to Betfair instead…
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/20 … ust-2-2010It’s a small world racing, isn’t it?
August 10, 2010 at 09:32 #311983So this means, if taken at face value, that all this fluting about going on TV trying to get others together for the Scoop 6 bonus etc has resulted in a net loss?
The mind boggles.August 10, 2010 at 09:44 #311986I think Finlay needs to get his arse on here for a few tips. That guy is a total sham.He reminds my of Peter Ridsdale when he was Leeds. swaning around like he was the best…..
If this is true why the hell get him ATR?.LOL great press a losing horse race owner.Tony Bloom is the main man out of those two.I have a great deal of respect for Bloom.
August 10, 2010 at 09:55 #311989No way will I reading him on Betfair. Can’t stand that shower pretending to be the alterboys and shafting racing at every opportunity. When they put into Racing what they get out of it only then will I use them.
Plus they’ve never offered me tick!
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Post replaced Nicholls with Ruby Walsh!

You are Paul Dixon or Nic Coward and I claim my £5.
Perhaps reading content Betfair has paid for and then placing your bets with someone else can be your act of rebellion.
August 10, 2010 at 10:43 #312003I agree with the post by Fist, not to make light of winning 9mill or to talk Findley down in any way, but you would think this guy was won of the biggest gamblers in the world the way the press write about him.
A lot of successful gamblers have bet 3/4 sports and been net losers on maybe 2 of them and still been huge winners overall, there is nothing in that article, no offence to the original poster intended
August 10, 2010 at 11:27 #312009I post links to quite a lot of Mark Davies’ blog entries — everyone admires people who agree with them most of the time — and this is another thought-provoking one.
It’s a direct response to the Telegraph article and also has relevance to the future-funding thread.
http://www.markxdavies.com/09/08/2010/t … n-findlay/August 10, 2010 at 12:21 #312019Does anyone know if it’s possible to see Sundays’ programme again online anywhere?

August 10, 2010 at 13:28 #312032Harry says at one point that paying another 1/2% commission would cost him £20,000 per month. That would have his monthly commission of 2% being at £80,000 and his monthly turnover £4 million quid. Believable?
He makes a very good point about it being much easier to win to small stakes. Threads on here and in other places where people (myself included) mention odds from bookmakers like Stan James, Blue Square and Betfred are ok if betting in tenners and scores but once you win over a period you get restricted or closed. Bigger punters have to resort to Betfair where it’s much harder to win.
It’s hard to argue with the low margin high volume model he advocates for the Tote- all that’s needed is the political will to allow Tote terminals into pubs and clubs and it would take off.August 10, 2010 at 13:34 #312034Never Nearer – thanks for that link –
It led me to this other interesting Davies blog –
http://markxdavies.blogspot.com/2010/06/premium-charge-and-levy.html
Here is a quote from the blog article, the subject being a meeting Davies had with a group of Racecourse Chief Executives –
‘One of those present said to me (repeatedly) that what we ought to do is just stop people winning.’
An interesting mindset insight.
Davies makes a good point when he highlights the need for racing to very clearly identify where and how it wants to generate its income, both now and in the future.
August 10, 2010 at 14:22 #312041Co-Mingling of Tote pools would be the best option Corm, racing needs a strong Tote alternative to the traditional books and the exchanges. As things stand we don’t have that and we won’t ever have effective co-mingling with South Africa, Australia, France, USA, Japan, Hong Kong etc. whilst we can’t get our races off on time.
