April 10, 2008 at 13:13 #157244Have a great retirement Hedgehunter.
Has been excellent for connections.
April 10, 2008 at 13:28 #157246So glad he’s made it. I can’t forget how serious that final fence fall in the 2004 National had looked at the time, but my goodness he’s proven in spares since then that it left no physical or mental scars.
He’s actually gone long enough without a win that I think he’d qualify for hunters’ chases next winter, had connections wanted to ensure him another spin around the big fences without still conceding weight to all. 2m5.5f around any course, even Aintree, is almost certainly too sharp for the old boy now, though, so on balance I think the right decision has been made.
Enjoy your retirement, Hedgehunter.

April 10, 2008 at 13:36 #157247The right decision, well earned.
April 10, 2008 at 14:05 #157251He doesn’t owe messrs Mullins & Hemmings a yard, and I’m glad that they’ve recognised this and given the old boy his pension whilst he’s still in reasonable order. He’s probably as close as some of the younger generation have to their own Red Rum such was his Aintree prowess, and he’ll deserve every minute of what is hopefully a long and happy retirement.
April 10, 2008 at 14:14 #157253Well said Friggo. He went out like a hero when ran well in the National with a lot of weight, which is they way I would like to remember him.
April 10, 2008 at 14:14 #157254Yes, long and happy retirement Hedgehunter; probably one of the most aptly named horses in the history of racing.
April 10, 2008 at 15:48 #157264Not often I feel compelled to post on this type of thread, but connections appear to be doing very well by Hedgehunter. Good on them.
April 10, 2008 at 15:52 #157266A grand performer. Particularly as I feared the worse after his first National.
April 10, 2008 at 19:24 #157301Isn’t a happy ending lovely? Long may he enjoy life.
April 10, 2008 at 20:10 #157311Very glad to see him him bow out unscathed. Long and happy retirement to him, he thoroughly deserves it.
April 10, 2008 at 21:38 #157325A superb horse – to come back from that awful fall at the last to win and be placed and complete 4 out of 5 times is a brilliant achievement. He deserves a long and happy retirement! Well done Hedgehunter!
April 12, 2008 at 00:04 #157495Thats great news!!!!
He can now have a long happy retirement…no doubing he deserves.
I was lucky enough to back him when he won the national, and had a tasty ew double GoldCup National..which was nice.
Three cheers to a long and happy retirement!!!
April 12, 2008 at 11:25 #157528Happy retirement to a good, genuine steeplchaser. I was fortunate enough to back him when he won the Grand National.

April 12, 2008 at 13:51 #157545A happy retirement to Hedgehunter, he deserves it.
Hope he has a better time than Hello Dandy, who was found in poor condition, living out and covered in rain-scald, in a field near Guildford, Surrey a few years ago
April 12, 2008 at 18:03 #157567I didn’t know that happened to Hello Dandy – very sad.
