Friends Reunited may well be on the demise but it is still good to have paths cross with old posters such as thee MrE.
If I dare to wind the clock back and pretend I am Doctor Who and time travelling, perhaps I can take you back to August 2001 when another old buddie of yours “Darrell” submitted one of the very first systems posted here: –
1) Non handicap races
2) the selection being the one closest to 2/1 (over or under)
3)Former “D” distance winner
4) placed 1.2.or 3 LTOSoon after the system posting a much younger MrE claimed a delightful treble when combining the selections with those via a certain Urban Dave’s method which returned £180 for a £5 stake.
I have checked todays cards without finding any qualifiers but because the thread started in August when the ground would not have been a mud bath such as been the case of late I only considered the more consistent AW surfaces.
But to the point of this submission I ask “Do you think such systems which worked in the past can do so again?”

February 1, 2016 at 13:57 #1231565That’s a good question Billy Boy, I’ll answer it more succinctly a little later…. gotta take the old biddy shopping now, or go without dinner tonight…..

February 1, 2016 at 16:40 #1231591Hello again Flower, I hope you still wear that pretty frilly frock that Nathan gave you, you looked quite fetching in that….. there was a danger that Matron was gonna come off his medication on account of you and your cross dressing. But enough of that meandering, it’s time to answer your question. You brought up those names from the past, I remember them well, that was at a time when TRF was tearing it up, we were on a roll back then and we did make some headway into our bookie bashing. Urban Dave???…. yep, he was “The Norfolk Nutter”, and Daz, he turned out more systems than you…. and a lot of ’em were profitable for the short term. Would they be relevant today???… I don’t see why not…. but they were pretty basic back then and would require a few tweaks here and there, but they could still be enjoyable in their raw state.
Systems are short lived animals these days, they need constant updating and tweaking because of the multitude of variables with racing in the UK….. unlike the States where the racing systems are mainly based on time (they have sectional timing), we can’t apply speed to our systems very successfully because of going, undulating tracks and the moving of the rails to gain better ground, all this gives time buffs a bit of an headache. If you use form and class as a base for your systems, you would fare far better. So I think it’s fair to say that I would very much doubt that systems that are 15 years old, would make any long term profit…. I hope that answers your question Billy my lad….. I am a systemite of long standing and there are systems/methods that work for me, but they’re all hard work, I don’t think that there’s anything that just takes minutes to work out….

February 1, 2016 at 16:59 #1231594Food for thought for the old goat…. I have a system that I did years ago and I made some decent returns, but it did get a bit scary at times… I haven’t checked it out for a few years, but it might still work. Again, this will need a bit of tweaking to suit your style, but I’m sure your good lady would prefer that you spent some time on the P/C, it’ll get you out from under her feet.
It revolved around “Dutching”…. no, no, snigger you not Bill, this did work and earned me a few holidays….. in actual fact, just writing about it is whetting my appetite. If you or Nathan want to get Ward 7 moving in the right direction again, I think that one of you, can take over this little gem (assuming it still works, of course). I’ll get to it a bit later, I’ve just noticed the time and I have gotta prepare dinner. Yes, you heard that right, I cook dinners now. I was diagnosed with diabetes and needed to change the way I eat, I got so into it, that I thought I’d give cooking a go and I’m loving it (as long as it doesn’t interfere with my horses)….

February 1, 2016 at 19:18 #1231612I only dropped in because of a stray email infiltrated my filters and having the crap kicked out of me elsewhere I have no desire to start “threading” as in past times but appreciate your reply MrE.
When here I can never resist delving into the archive of past systems and agree some suggestions are basic but then again I have always erred towards the less complicated approach, my poor old brain can’t take too much stress these days.
If Claiming Stakes can be regarded as Non Handicaps then PATRIOTIC (3.00 Southwell) on the morrow at 7/4 could be of interest. Having “CD” credit and winning form LTO 28 days ago, it is the only race qualifier.

February 1, 2016 at 19:50 #1231630That’s OK Bill, nice to “see” you again….. perhaps we’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when…… now you’ve got me singing, that’s mainly because you remind me of Vera Lynn….
Enjoy your travels Bill, I’ll bump into you again in the not too distant future….

February 2, 2016 at 11:22 #1231803Guys… nothing of interest today except that Vic De Touzaine in the 3.15 Taunton looks like a LAY @ 2.70….. but I’m not convinced enough to put any cash down, so a definite NO BET day for me….

MrE
Edit… Oh well, I let that one slip through the net… Vic was a successful LAY….. no confidence in my own ability, laying scares the crap outa me…..
February 2, 2016 at 23:07 #1231939It’s taken awhile to try and get to grips with a new ratings service that I’m using, but I’m getting there slowly….. I am a systemite of long standing and have regular posts on other forums with a small series of successes. My systems have shown a profit in the past, but nothing to set the world alight….. but I have revisited one today for the first time in about 4 years, just to see what it might look like with these fresh ratings alongside it…. I’m astounded at the results…. OK, this could be just a fluke, a flash in the pan, but this system is years old and these new ratings might just have given it a dose of Viagra.
There were 10 bets today and 5 of them were winners, the surprising thing was the prices of the winners…. 7.20… 9.00… 7.40… 9.80…. 10.00….. I’m not your normal run of the mill mug punter and I know that this is far from normal, but it’s something that I’ll keep an eye on for the next couple of weeks anyway….
It was something similar to the system that I was doing to give to Bill to liven up Ward 7 a bit, would have caused a few ripples and a lot of laughs…. and maybe even some profit. But as we know, things change, upsets happen, and we lose members of good standing, there’s not a lot of the good guys left these days, they just get wazzed off with being pilloried and I don’t blame them at all…. according to which God you follow, there’s only one life, so live it and leave everone else to live their own.
This aint a whinge guys, far from it, but Billy the Frocks post about Daz and Urban Dave made me think a bit, those days are gone and that’s a crying shame. It’s a bit like the demise of CB Radio, I was in that too when it was in it’s prime, it was all hellfire and damnation…
then they changed the waveband to FM and everybody joined in, buggered up the whole game, you could only talk to idiots then (mostly kids)….. I’ve digressed slightly and gone off topic, but the message is the same….. stick with the old ways with some things, it’s more fun…. change can mean a gradual decline and ultimately death…. Ward 7 is to good to end up like that.

MrE
PS…. I’ve had a few bevvies…. does it show????
February 3, 2016 at 13:36 #1232036These are my main bets for today, taken from the ratings that I’m using…. they are NOT those multi win bets from yesterday, I still want to check those out…. so my bets for today are…
2.45 Ludl… Another Hero…. 1st @ 5.00…

4.40 Leic… In The Crowd…. 2nd @ 4.30…

MrE
Edit for update….. February now @ + 1pt….

February 4, 2016 at 12:43 #1232179Afternoon guys…. I hope your all wearing your Tena Pads because we’ve got us a fistful today…. I hope we don’t end the day with the adrenaline running down our legs. My own selections are mentioned first, if the new ratings agree, it’s the only selection in that race…. but if these new ratings think that my selection is “weak”, I include the horse that appears to be the danger and I back BOTH….
1.50 South… Extreme Supreme/Ancient Cross….
2.50 South… L’Inganno Felice/Art Scholar….
3.25 South… Virnon….
5.10 Chelm… Giovanni Di Bicci/Pendo….
5.40 Chem… Flying Fantasy….
6.10 Chelm… Saved My Bacon….I also think that Pressurize in the 2.00 Winc is a weak fav and I’ll LAY that at the current price of 2.44…..
MrE
Edit for update….. what a load of crap that turned out to be… Ancient Cross was a non runner and we had a winner @ 3.50, rubbish….
Ok, we staked 6.5pts today and had a 1.75pt return… LOSS for the day of 4.75pts.
Balance for Feb… (- 3.75pts)…..February 4, 2016 at 19:09 #1232225I have to visit the hospital tomorrow morning and I wont be home until midday….. I doubt that I will get time to post, unless the selections are in later races, if I can get them posted prior to racing, I will, if not, I’ll catch you all on Saturday…..
MrE
February 5, 2016 at 13:37 #1232321A bit rushed, but made it in time….
2.25 Catt… Auld Thunder/Hellorboston…..
2.55 Catt… Tambura/Iron Butterfly….
3.15 Chep… Kings River/Ballyegan….
4.40 Ling… Hiorne Tower/Trending….MrE
February 5, 2016 at 15:52 #1232336You need something in the 16:40 – fingers crossed!
February 5, 2016 at 16:23 #1232347Hi Matron…. yeah, things have got to change….. it looks like I made a mistake in purchasing some other ratings because they are hammering me. I had a very successful December and January, but I needed to decrease the workload, so I did something that I would never have done a few years ago, I “paid” for some ratings….. oh dear, it looks like I’m paying a hefty penalty now. The good thing about posting your selections and ideas, it forces you to take stock very quickly and check and see where the profits are leaking from…. I found the leak, now I have to plug it…
I cannot just ignore these ratings, I paid for three months worth… but I will use them on their own, instead of ruining an already good method…. I will start this tomorrow whatever the result in that last race.MrE
February 5, 2016 at 19:44 #1232379Guys…. I had two winners today, both at 5.20, so a couple of points profit….. but as stated in previous post, I can’t continue posting selections that I am unhappy with…. so from tomorrow, I will change staking and venture some of these selections under different headings, 3 systems for your perusal…. keep your money in your pocket until you see what the results are like…. thanks for letting me ramble on, but I think a change is required….
