One Irish punter has enough of the SP-slashing before the off:
March 3, 2008 at 21:40 #148221That’s a disgrace that he got off with a suspended sentence. It’s hardly a moment of madness when he has time to think about such actions on his way home to get a sledgehammer.
March 3, 2008 at 21:44 #148223Would have banged him up personally. How people get away with such behaviour defies belief……
March 3, 2008 at 21:48 #148225That’s why I am so relieved that I am on the other end of a phone with our customers rather than face to face.
I don’t envy anyone who works in a betting shop these days.March 3, 2008 at 21:49 #148226As David says getting a taxi home to collect said sledgehammer sounds somewhat premeditated to me.
As fo the judge saying paying compensation is a "matter of conscience" it goes to show the UK does not have the monopoly with stupid judges.
March 3, 2008 at 21:49 #148227Well basically, in Ireland, you get your solicitor to tell the judge/court that it wasn’t really your fault because (pick whichever one you want from this list):
1. You had a tough childhood
2. You are now seeking therapy
3. You have now got a job and are contributing to society
4. You are a new father blah blah blah
5. You are no longer on drink/drugs
6. Other hard luck story/excuseand you get a suspended sentence.
Works for everything from burglary to assault and back again
March 3, 2008 at 21:51 #148228I’m astounded. No physical history of mental illness mentioned the article and proof of pre-meditation, yet he gets away with a suspended sentence because he supposedly has "an unusually frail personality". Poor lamb.
The Judge’s attitude just goes to show how much all Irish hate the bookies!
March 3, 2008 at 21:52 #148229Thats not all – there was a smashed up taxi too after he found out the taxi driver had ripped him off for €2…

Sorry I find the article a bit sad, funny in places and also dangerous – a bit like the weather forecast.
March 3, 2008 at 21:56 #148231Iv’e had the most appalling day at work and some of these posts have just put a smile back on my face (despite the seriousness of the subject). Cheers
March 3, 2008 at 21:57 #148232Corm,
Make sure you don’t activate ‘Hammer Of Fury’ when you go through the new members list

March 3, 2008 at 22:30 #148243I actually find it quite funny, Ive seen worse things happen. If you work in a betting shop (or a pub for that matter), it pays to be pleasant and efficient. The report says she barred the bloke for complaining about being ripped off (I imagine he was pretty cheeky but that happens in betting shops), it must have just been the wrong day for the bloke, but its a fairly funny over reaction from him.
Im not sure if you’ve got a given time span before it becomes pre-meditated, how do you legally define the length of time a moment of madness lasts for.
March 3, 2008 at 22:35 #148246It is quite funny as long as no-one was hurt!
March 3, 2008 at 22:36 #148247There’s some people with some very strange senses of humour on here.
March 3, 2008 at 22:59 #148256i should imagine if all bookies in his locality were legally obliged to not serve him that would rather annoy him

March 4, 2008 at 20:55 #148423bulwark , its not funny when you have a punter coming over the counter at you , smashing the bandit screens etc.mouthing obscenities at you , just cos his donkey has been beaten, why should staff take that crap, they would’nt do it in M@S would they.
March 4, 2008 at 20:57 #148424Actually I don’t think his horse WAS beaten – I think the price changed as he got on and his winnings were down €2.
