If hurdles/fences counts as dual purpose then it would have to be Dawn Run

Dual prurpose means a horse who runs all year round on the flat and over hurdles or Istabraq and Persian War would be the choice of many

Kribensis, Royal Gate and Alderbrook albeit very good flat horse can’t really be regarded as dual purpose.

I’m with AG on this one – Fiepes strike rate for wins and places and variety of distances, types of races and going is excellent. If it does run tomorrow I’ll have to have a little punt on it now, well done AG

Does winning the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle count as duel purpose?
Only one horse in National Hunt history has done that. That must be some trick?

No, but I would agree with the second assertion- IMO Dawn Run’s double is one of the greatest feats of National Hunt racing.

On the subject of this thread, my first thoughts upon seeing the title were "surely that beast who placed in a Champion Hurdle before winning the Arc is 1.01 here?". Venusian has since brought him up (Le Paillon)- I don’t think there’s much room for improvement on that achievement in 1947!

Actually Simon, it was today at Auteuil, and Christian has told me how he ran: Phil Carberry sent him on in front as usual – the water jump was not a problem as he is a long striding horse. The favourite (Kiko, from the all-conquering Chaille-Chaille stable) fell early on, and Fiepes went on, despite the ground really being too soft (apparently, it was heavy on the bends). He was still clear turning into the home straight, but approaching the last, the extra furlong and the testing ground took it’s toll, and he finished fourth, only beaten 1/2 length by third. The general concensus is that that distance in that ground was just a bit too much for Fiepes.

It’s ironic really, that with such an all rounder, races for him are really hard to find! I think now, we’ll try and look for some 2 miles chases on decent ground. We could go to Italy – that might be the favourite at the moment, but we’ll wait and see. After the Celebration chase, the handicapper told us that his handicap rating is 150, so we’ve got our hands tied a little bit, but hopefully there’s a race out there for him somewhere!!

    Darren,

With regards to FIEPPES SHUFFLE why don`t you look at Lyon Parilly, the going is usually good and the conditions of the races would allow him to run,the only horses that run their are ones with over inflated h`cap marks so you should get an easy pick up, Toulouse would be interesting if you where a little closer, however, having seen the Van der Recke horses running in Mijas (Near Marbella) this would be like a trip to the local Grocery shop!

Nancy would be another option especially as it suits front runners, however,i would be reluctant to run anything at this track as they don`t do much with the ground!

Auteuil is a great track but you need something that likes cut, even in the middle of summer i`ve never seen them race on anything other than soft or heavy!

Potentially the best chaser to come out of Germany is AIR FORCE ONE, i`m not keen on ex flat horses jumping fences but this one is a true natural,i guess theirs always an exception !

Thanks for that Tony. Sure, we have had a look at French tracks, and apart from the ones you mentioned, Fontainebleu, Strasbourg and Clairefontaine were others we looked at. Unfortunately, there just isn’t a suitable race for him for the next 3 months, unless we go back to Auteuil – the chases at the right distance tend to be for 4 and/or 5 year olds only. There are a couple of races at some smaller tracks, but the prize money is only about 20,000 EUR, so I think Merano is favourite at the minute – there is a 40,000 EUR chase there over 2m 1f next month. Also, most of the chases there are contested by local horses and ones from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, so they would be arguably easier to win than a race somewhere in France.

Air Force One is certainly a potential star, but taking my bias off for a second, I would say that Well Chief is the best chaser thus far to have been bred in Germany. As for dual purpose, he won a Listed race in Germany, and also performed with credit in Group races.

He ran in the 2006 CH, because he owners wanted to give it a go. He never got far enough ahead, but he was never really going on the course – he needs a much flatter course than Cheltenham.

Well, the Celebration Chase is on there, but unfortunately, none of his German races. There are a couple of German based racing posters on there who put up some top races, but there’s not much there in the way of chases.

does ‘Flipper’ have to be on utube to have ‘made it’ Mr. Fist??..he’s not been in Hello magazine either for that matter……he isn’t even ‘dual’ purpose..he’s quadruple purpose which makes him in a league of his own methinks……!

Well, after running on the flat, over hurdles, over fences, on the all weather, and on the snow, Fiepes Shuffle is taking on a new challenge tomorrow at Bad Harzburg – and I’m really worried about it. Tomorrow at Bad Harzburg sees the Lake Race that the late great Helmac made his own – and Fiepes will be running!! As it’s part of the Fegentri World Series, all the jockeys are amateurs, and Christian has secured the services on Englishman Danny Cook, but you know how Flipper runs – he’s eyeballs out from the word go, and I just don’t know how on earth Danny will be able to apply the brakes coming to the lake – knowing Flipper, he’ll probably try and jump it!!

The lake race was make for a horse like Helmac, who would go through the lake like a hovercraft, but I just don’t know how Flipper will fare. Certainly, if he wins it, it will be fantastic, and without a doubt, will confim him as the most versatile horse the world has ever seen. As I’ve mentioned before, it is so difficult to find races for him – the race at Merano was written off as it the conditions didn’t suit (unknown to me, he’d be giving away about 5-6 kg to his rivals), and he’s a horse that just loves to race. I won’t be there as I’d already got other plans, but Christian is going to call me from the course to say how he got on. As for the jockey, I don’t know anything about him, but we’ve used lots of different amateurs before, and some of them have been excellent – we got a Mr R P Quinlan from Ireland once to ride Our First Chesnut in Merano, and Ruby Walsh would have been proud of the finish he rode.

The race won’t be easy tomorrow – amongst Flippers opponents is Allegan, the only horse ever to beat Helmac in a lake race. Christian also runs Martimix, last seen in England when running 5th in a novice hurdle at Leicester in December, when trained by Savinja Braem in Belgium. Obviously, with what happened to Helmac in the Hamburg lake race earlier this month, I’m worried about Flipper – let’s hope that he, and all the other horses and riders come through this unique spectacle unscathed – and that Flipper the Great One leads them home as only he knows how!

PS: Incase there’s anyone out there who wonders what the dickens I’m on about, last years lake race is on You Tube at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAs-nWaeHio

and Helmac is the one with a 10 length lead approching the first fence!
