Liverpool St to Chelmsford and it’s about 5 miles from there – apparently there will be a free bus.

February 19, 2008 at 22:19 #144861ap..I take it you’ve had the opportunity to view the racebook through Weatherbys. Is this information in the public domain at present anywhere else ?
14 races being run at Kempton and Lingfield tomorrow, and in only three of those will the winning connections take home more than £2100 if they are fortunate enough to win the race.
If you’re satisfied with that then I apologise.
February 19, 2008 at 22:26 #144864BSB,
Yes, I’ve seen the program via the BHA website – I don’t know if the feature races are publicised on the racecourse’s own website.
Not sure what the prize money at Kempton and Lingfield has to do with Great Leighs? I agree it’s poor, but that’s the current financial climate in racing generally, rather than anything specifically to do with the AW tracks.
When turf racing returns, the money at the lesser tracks will be just the same.
That’s why it’s good to see Great Leighs at least trying to run a higher percentage of decent races and I’ll certainly support them whenever possible.

February 19, 2008 at 22:35 #144866Just to take one turf track as an example, Folkestone have three flat meetings in April.
April 1st, 7 races, total prize money £26,200
April 10th, 6 races, total prize money £23,600
April 22nd, 7 races, total prize money £27,700

Yes i know but unforunatley the county map and post code for me is Cheshire so i am stuck with it even though we come under Wigan Council.
Quite bizare really but what can you do
February 19, 2008 at 22:51 #144871It’s an Arena Leisure PLC track AP, so I wouldn’t really expect any different.
Did you read their trading statement on January 9th ? ‘Racino’s’ and expanded hotels at Wolverhampton; a golf course and leisure complex at Lingfield. The sport of horseracing is just the enabler for them.
I might be talking out of turn here, but I just don’t figure what they’re doing for the long-term good of racing at the moment.
February 19, 2008 at 22:53 #144873Newton used to be in Lancashire as did Haydock Golf Club, the oldest in Lancashire circa 1877.
Some things will never change.
February 19, 2008 at 23:27 #144880The prize money and level of racing at Kempton and Lingfield has a lot to do with Great Leighs as a lot of GL’s fixtures were transferred to those two tracks.

February 20, 2008 at 06:52 #144906I still think April 1st would have been more appropriate. Any news on the Manchester or Welsh new tracks are they going ahead?
February 20, 2008 at 07:17 #144907February 20, 2008 at 07:33 #144908where’s the nh racing today – called off again ?
people take a dim view on all weather racing but conveniently forget there are equal numbers of uncompetitive low grade nh races with outcomes more likely determined by weather than form with finishing distances of miles – thats if the horse manages to get round in one piece
the going is fair and consistent on the sand and finishes are often close and exciting and the point about the amount of it is that racing is for participation and enjoyment – 100 days of racing a year at lingfield is great imo and with kempton and now great leighs coming on line i’ll at least be able to see racing pretty much when i want to now and i can be at any of the tracks within an hour of leaving the office
if people want to persist with snobbish anti-aw attitudes and support these low grade nh affairs at courses with inconsistent and dangerous going that only race every now and then, why not stick to p-t-p, at least that gives you the exclusivity you seem to desire and nobody will say its only on for the bookies
not sure if i’ll go to the opening day of great leighs or not yet but i will be there soon
February 20, 2008 at 08:07 #144913BSB,
Great Leighs is NOT an Arena Leisure course.
Arena Leisure have been contracted to provide a day to day management team that can run the meetings and train staff employed by Great Leighs. But they have no say at all in how the track is managed, prize money, race program etc.

So what?
Are you being forced to watch it?
To me its like an Arsenal supporter complaining about the existence of the Ryman league
February 20, 2008 at 09:50 #144933BSB,
Apologies – I just realised that your last post of course referred to Folkestone, not Great Leighs. So my previous post, whilst factually correct, was totally irrelevant and pointless – sorry.
I do agree about your general point on Arena.
Richard,
When the other tracks take over a fixture from Great Leighs, they are not committed to match the prize money that would have been offered by Great Leighs. In fact, in a prime example, an 81 – 100 race worth £16,000 scheduled for a fixture transferred to Southwell, has been replaced by a 0 -60 worth £3600.

February 22, 2008 at 17:35 #145589I don’t live in Essex so its nought to me if they build one or not.
Seems odd to posit the question and then profess no interest in any answer thereto.
I am sure though that even Essex based PTP enthusiasts wouldn’t baulk at the idea of seeing NH Rules racing in their county would they? Or are PTP enthusiasts too elitist for that?
Of course they’re not… . Were it ever to pass that the old jumps track at Newmarket was resurrected, or a few brush hurdles strategically left dotted around Yarmouth, they’d surely be at either venue with bells on.

February 22, 2008 at 18:13 #145601I think it was John Hislop who wrote that mercifully they don’t have jumps racing at Newmarket otherwise loose horses wouldn’t be caught until they’d reached Cambridge.
