It’s been reported that Great Endeavour was put down this morning after breaking his leg in a field whilst on his break at Timmy Murphy’s. Just shows that you don’t need to be running in a Grand National to suffer a fatal injury. Although not the most consistent of horses, he was nevertheless very talented and very striking in appearence. He’ll be missed I’m sure by all his connections.

Is this really necessary? I’m not having a go at you in particular as David Pipe has come out with the same sanctimonious crap. I’m sure everybody who watches the sport or knows anything about horses is fully aware of the fact that accidents can happen anywhere. Besides, the general public have pretty much already forgotten about the Grand National.
At best, statements like these are patronising and at worse, it’s using the death of a thoroughly likeable horse for petty point scoring. Pathetically, against nobody in particular.

You beat me to it – absolutely agree with you BH
April 20, 2012 at 10:52 #401513Regardless of all the ‘horses can die anywhere’ debacle, this is desperately sad news. One of my favourite horses, a real likeable character and tough cookie to go with it, such a shame.
April 20, 2012 at 11:53 #401523Very sad news, but can I say I personally find Paul and BH’s response ro the original poster to be most rude.

Why?
Like I said, I found grand national sentence to be either an insult to my intelligence or in very bad taste.
If you want to be pedantic, OP himself didn’t express any personal sadness in his post. As such, I took it as an abstract observation and responded in kind.

April 20, 2012 at 12:57 #401528I agree with Raffingora and moehat and that’s why I still say the national, which accounts for a fraction of a single percent of equine accidents, should not be singled out. You know what would be next, NH racing in general, flat racing and then horses in fields!
Perhaps we could look at hunting, whaling, seal culls and other acts of gratuitous animal cruelty before we get our knickers in a twist over occasional accidents and in the process of getting them in a twist, getting everybody else’s in a twist.
Like has been correctly said though, it’s yesterday’s news now and will be for a year, save for a few people with too much time on their hands and too little self satisfaction.
April 20, 2012 at 17:17 #401546I must apologise. Must have misunderstood the point that Raffingora was trying to make. As they are a poster that follows the Pipe horses I assumed they have a fondness for Great Endeavour and could be hurt by the replies.
April 20, 2012 at 17:49 #401552Apology accepted. Words can be misinterpreted in the heat of the moment and it can happen to anybody. No harm, no foul
April 20, 2012 at 19:32 #401568Obviously didn’t word my original post very well!! I am David Pipe’s biggest fan and Great Endeavour along with Ashkazar and Grand Crus was one of my favourite horses and I was quite shocked when I read the report. I wasn’t trying to make a point about the National, I was just trying to make the point that the life of a racehorse is always open to danger whether it be in a race or careering around a field. I must improve my literary skills. That’s what being a maths teacher for 35 years does for you!!
April 20, 2012 at 19:36 #401569Lovely horse. I remember Mark Howard’s book putting him up one year as a 40 to follow animal, and I remember going to Towcester to both watch him and steam into him at odds-on on his chasing debut.
Very sad. RIP old chum.
I remember also one of the most popular racemares of all time, Triptych, tragically met her Waterloo out in a field when colliding with a vehicle. She was one of me and my dad’s favourites, and we still reminisce about her remarkable 1988 Coronation Cup victory.
Of course animals can die in any situation at any time of the day. Some situations, however, or more likely to cause the animal physical harm than others. My rough guess is that the likelihood of a horse dying loose in a field compared with say jumping around the Grand National course is extremely slim, though I am prepared to stand corrected.
To make comparison between the two is probably futile. Hence my comparisons with the Gold Cup and the GN on another thread.
In the end
on here
we all love the horses . Some, probably all, love the tradition of the sport. I was raised as a very young boy to be transfixed to the TV when the National was on. It was probably THE most important sporting event to me between the ages of 6-13.
I am finding it increasingly difficult to justify it to non-racing friends and acquaintances, yet ironically through my research into the comparable equine death rates of jump races, I am able to demonstrate to those same friends that all jump racing is not so bad.
April 20, 2012 at 19:51 #401573Was she in foal at the time as well?
April 20, 2012 at 20:05 #401574For those who might not remember. The great Dawn Run and her most acclaimed opponent Buck House met their end within a couple of months of each other.Buck House was put out to pasture after Punchestown and died of collic, Dawn Run died of a horrible fall in the Champion Hurdles of France that same season. Both the running of Dawn Run and the pasturising of Buck House were criticised as the wrong decision by the know it all people.Heads I win Tails you lose.

Very fair point – I took your comment the wrong way – apologies.

I think she was, possibly to Mr. Prospector, but memory may be wrong on that!
