Added Hogan’s Height 10-1 ew who likes the fences, is back at his right trip, and had a recent warm up over hurdles.

Not a big Antepost race for me, so despite that concern over the ground, I’ll throw a few pounds the way of Manofthemountain at 20’s.

Of the other pair on the original shortlist, A Toi Phil and Spyglass Hill, I’ll hold off.

The 10’s for Time To Get Up looks very fair, but I’ll hold off, and I’d happily lose a couple of points to bet him after Final Decs.

I’ve gone for Red Risk with Bryony jocked up already. He jumped pretty well in his pipe opener apart from hashing up the last, but got rolling again and was closing at the death, a good sign that his wind op has worked (he had a known problem so it wasn’t just one of those mass “zap his palate and see” jobs).

He has the scope to deal with the fences, knows how to fiddle one if necessary, is OK on most types of ground (I think), looks a straightforward enough ride, gets the trip, is hopefully well handicapped if the wind issue was holding him back, and Nicholls said before his last run that he would come on for it.

I’ve put a bit on at 25s ew.

Quite a solid stat it seems. The last youngster to win was the 6 year French bred As de Mee, trained by Paul Nicholls.

Tom Scudamore booked for Time To Get Up. The 10’s is already gone, so although I didn’t want to bet him Antepost, I’ll take the 8’s just now. This pair risky, and I’ve been cautious, but I really like the pair of them.

    Manofthemountain 20’s EW
    Time To Get Up 8’s

Taken the view it’ll be soft going so just Hogan’s Height for me at this stage.

I wasn’t a fan of Jonjo O’Neill, particular in handicaps, until last season when the stable came alive with well placed handicappers. I do wonder if a ‘campaign planner’ was taken on for placing of the stable’s horses as something definitely made a real difference. Time to Get Up is likely to be a shortish price but difficult to find anything better in a race which will presuambly be the first on the way to the Grand National. Finished off winning the Midlands Grand National, but ran perfectly well over shorter distances before that. The ‘excuse story’ for his run at this meeting last season read like ‘War And Peace’! That was 2m 4f and he finished close enough while ‘not given a hard time’.

I think Time To Get Up may have been overbet a bit. Probably just a starting point for his season, and suitable winning opportunities over longer trips await.

Playing devils advocate – does Time To Get Up actually need to win a race this season off his mark to get into the National? It would be very ballsy and very much touch and go for connections but he might just sneak in down the bottom off what he’s on now or a couple of lbs higher for a few nice placed runs. Give him a nice sighter here on Saturday, hit the frame, up a couple of lbs, ideal. I could be getting too cynical in my old age

I’ve backed Sir Jack Yeats anyway very pleased with both his runs over the fences last year when he was out of the weights, I’d imagine this and the Topham would be his season long targets based on that.

There was a time when I would have bought into the ‘is it the day?’ with Time To Get up, but Jonjo O’Neill seemed to ditch that outlook last season. I don’t see many strong candidates in this contest and happy with my selection. Market seemed to over react a little, out to 11/2 now and I’ll hold off until tomorrow.
