Corbierre was a joy to watch the way he jumped from fence to fence as was Aldaniti.
I would be tempted to get a copy of "Champions" starring John Hurt. As you probaly know it’s the story of the winning jockey Bob Champion’s fight against cancer and Aldinti’s comeback againt injury…..despite the odds being stacked against tem they won the greatest steeeple chase in the world.
Would bring a tear to a glass eye……they watch that the’ll be chomping at the bit to see the real thing.
May 20, 2010 at 10:38 #296290Not the National itself but you really should show them Frankie Figg jumping the National fences – the best jumper of the big fences I’ve ever seen, jumping them too well has been his downfall twice
May 20, 2010 at 11:44 #296296Rhyme And Reason, on his belly and last at one point, recovering to win, well worth a watch
May 25, 2010 at 13:33 #296847Definitely all of Red Rums x 5 (especially 1974 when carrying 12 stone himself) and also worth showing them his video (A National Hero) as some great footage of him in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year studio (having gone up there in the lift) and on Blackpool Tower etc. Just illustrates his larger than life personality!
May 25, 2010 at 15:26 #296865Alright, here are the races you need to show them…
1965 – American connections and a great finish…
1967 – Just for the 23rd fence and the amazing commentary
1971 – There aren’t many Nationals that have 5 horses with a chance of winning with a furlong to go…
The Red Rum Saga for obvious reasons…
1980 for the Americans…
1981 – However you go need to explain the story behind it…
1991 – However you need to explain about Garrison Savannah’s Gold Cup win and the jockey on board and refer to ’73 and Crisps rider…
1993 – Goes without saying…
1994 – Action packed and just a great race to watch…
1998 – Sure the race lacked quality horses, but it is full of action…
2000 – Has everything…
2006 – For Ballycassidy…
2001 – Just for the numbers sake…
2004 – A great race altogether…
They are the definitive ones for my money…

It’s three actually…
2009 Topham… fell at Bechers
2009 Sefton… fell 4 out
2010 Topham… unseated 2 outI had him in the Topham this year too… heartbreaking.
May 25, 2010 at 19:05 #296892Can’t remember what year it was but pretty sure the National your US friends would appreciate was the one where the winner was ridden by Elizabeth Taylor.
Only looked about 13 at the time , different criteria for jockeys in those days – stable lad bore an uncanny resemblance to Mickey Rooney so there’s another link.
May 25, 2010 at 19:26 #296895The National is a bit long. Couldn’t you show them Dessie’s King Georges instead?

Of course not! The Grand National is the greatest race in the world and comes before all other feats!

I’m not sure his downfall this year was jumping too well, more not jumping well enough (at least at that fence) but the jumping early on was amazing. I’ve backed him all three times too but most definitely keeping the faith

Don’t worry he’ll win the Sefton in November Though it may be the pace might be too fast for him on that track. The Becher might actually be the way to go. He has won at 3 miles 1, so he should stay…
But i’m off topic.
