Here’s a thought…which horse would be the best staying chaser of all time, races over 30f or longer? Including other Nationals, the Eider, National Hunt Chase, Sandown Gold Cup, Cross Country races etc, even the Devon Marathon or the often forgotten North Yorkshire National. Currently I’d have to go Synchronised, before that Garde Champetre.
My favourite horses - Red Rum, Spanish Steps, Proud Tarquin, Esban, Go-Pontinental, Barona, Charles Dickens, The Dikler, Astbury, Black Secret, Vulgan Town, Huperade, Well To Do, Crisp, Quintus, Argent, Colebridge, Pearl Of Montreal, Nereo, Sonny Somers, Tubs VI, Tartan Ace, Red Candle, L'Escargot, Bula, Beau Bob, Rouge Autumn, Rough Silk, Frodo, Deblin's Green, Prince Tino, Eyecatcher, The Pilgarlic, Captain Christy, Mr Midland, Interview II, Credit Call, My Virginian, Flush Of Diamonds, Scout, Money Ma

December 30, 2016 at 14:00 #1279272I think you must have misread Golden Minstrel! There’s also a Flight, Rapper, Whin, Kite, Freeze, Fox, Surprise and Trix, but no Miller.
Incidentally, There have been plenty of horses beginning with colours, eg Red Rum, Black Aplachi, practically every colour except White. I can’t find any horse that’s run in the National beginning with that colour and I’ve gone back to 1884 so far. No yellows either, but horses aren’t usually yellow, seems a bit strange White isn’t used more. Come to think of it, don’t know any fmous horse with that prefix
You won’t find any pre-1884 but: White Cockade 1921, White Surrey 1921/25/26, White Park 1927…
December 30, 2016 at 16:22 #1279292Teal and Freebooter should both be much higher. If Teal hadn’t died of injuries he received in the 1953 Cheltenham Gold Cup, he may well have been one of the all time greats.
