See Grand Nationals since 1946
Huperade came out as the worst performer in Grand Nationals, but there were a lot of horses in the earlier Nationals who qualified by finishing 4th in the Liverpool Foxhunters, with only 4 finishers, or won a £x chase with a walkover, and who’s official handicap would have had them carrying a large helium balloon attached to the back of the saddle instead of weight.
Popham Down was a bit unfortunate in 1967, bad press etc, as was Easter Hero in 1928.
Worst horse ever – I watched Charlotte Brew on Barony Fort in 77, as first lady rider, and felt Ginger McCain was foolish in his words, but the horse never got out of first gear, and was tailed off after about 4 fences. It got to the last open ditch, but so slowly it could have been lapped! But all credit to Charlotte for opening the way.
My favourite horses - Red Rum, Spanish Steps, Proud Tarquin, Esban, Go-Pontinental, Barona, Charles Dickens, The Dikler, Astbury, Black Secret, Vulgan Town, Huperade, Well To Do, Crisp, Quintus, Argent, Colebridge, Pearl Of Montreal, Nereo, Sonny Somers, Tubs VI, Tartan Ace, Red Candle, L'Escargot, Bula, Beau Bob, Rouge Autumn, Rough Silk, Frodo, Deblin's Green, Prince Tino, Eyecatcher, The Pilgarlic, Captain Christy, Mr Midland, Interview II, Credit Call, My Virginian, Flush Of Diamonds, Scout, Money Ma

April 4, 2010 at 21:40 #287557Quirinus the Czech horse ran abysmally one year and was tailed off after about 3 fences. Was Hettinger trained by John Ffitch-Heyes and ridden by his daughter? Wasn’t there some sort of controversy surrounding him later on. He certainly was hopeless.
Talking of hopeless Ginger McCain ran a few over the years, Sure Metal, Back Bar, an aged Commercial Artist, none of them had a chance of winning in a month of Sundays.
With regards to punching above their weight it was good to hear people mention Big Brown Bear and Merry People, I think Forest Ranger ran well one year under Dai Tegg at long odds, I think the jockey was badly injured not long after that.April 4, 2010 at 21:48 #287560Seven……..Yeah, ridden by his daughter in 88, fell at first, and Ray Goldstein in 89. He got knocked out at first Bechers. I met him at Hamilton a few years ago, and bored him to tears talking about it. The horse was always controversial, his jumping was poor to say the least!
Dai Tegg was well up with the pace on Forest Ranger in 92, but weakened to finish 12th, I think he was about 200-1. Tegg got injured in 93-94 season and lost winning ride on Flakey Dove to Mark Dwyer in 94 Champion Hurdle.
April 4, 2010 at 22:26 #287569Dai Tegg used to ride a lot for my old fave John Edwards!! Tom Morgan got on all the good uns but Teggie used to pick up the rejects!!
And he would have won the Champino on Flakey too!!
He had a brain tumor or something but I think he worked for a trainer a few years later but don’t know where he is now -
