Should racing be concerned? Or is it a case of something which upsets “The Guardian” more than it does the public?
November 5, 2021 at 17:05 #1566372This feels like a bit of a non-issue to me. I doubt the wider public will give it much thought. And it’s not as if many other large corporations are squeaky clean. There are also negative connotations with drinks companies and bookies who would seem the most likely alternative sponsors.
I was interested to read in the article about Owen Paterson being the husband of the late Rose Paterson, which I hadn’t been aware of before. I wonder if this played a part in Aintree getting the Randox sponsorship, not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that.
November 5, 2021 at 19:10 #1566405Guardian as always looking for trouble where trouble (in all probability) does not exist.
Value Is EverythingNovember 5, 2021 at 19:34 #1566418The Graun appears to be concerned that the late Rose Paterson may have influenced her husband Owen Paterson to convince Randox to enter into a five year sponsorship deal with Aintree.
Congatulations to her if she did – racing could do with more enthusiasm like that!
Despite having precisely zero evidence of any impropriety whatsoever, it then laughably asserts:
It will be an annual reminder of the lobbying scandal, which could lead to concerns, for Aintree and racing as a whole, about the extent to which the National’s image might suffer as a result.
Dearie me!

November 5, 2021 at 20:02 #1566423The question of cruelty was and still is the biggest problem facing the National.
November 6, 2021 at 12:31 #1566546I’m afraid there are a lot of links to different things and, yes, I think there could well be a problem. Especially as so many people look for any excuse to come down heavily on the race.
November 6, 2021 at 15:28 #1566601It will be brought up, most likely again in April; to be honest, racing could do without people like Harding, Patterson et al……but seems to not be bothered about it – as it has it’s head in the sand, regularly.
November 6, 2021 at 15:47 #1566603What has Randox done wrong, Andy / Moehat?
Guilt by association?Value Is EverythingNovember 7, 2021 at 19:08 #1566773There’s an article in today’s Times. Randox were given a contract to do covid testing. Universities had the expertise to do this and offered to do so but they were told to give equipment to Randox because, even though they’d got the contract they didn’t necessarily have the right equipment to do the testing [at least that’s my interpretation of the article]. I think if and when there is an official enquiry into the pandemic and the contracts handed out the links between Paterson, Randox, Aintree etc could look rather dodgy. Maybe it was because the testing needed to be done on a huge scale; that I don’t know. Airlines had to be paid to fly tests to Ireland.
