“Cormack will pay for the kebabs and petrol”

I consider that a somewhat unlikely dénouement, tbf, Nathan.

Some good news in this thread for once – Cape Gentleman has been discharged from hospital. He is lodging with trainer Shark Hanlon for the time being.

    Brilliant news.
tbh immediately after the race I was thinking there’d be at least three fatalities and therefore the Grand National would be in danger.

    Relieved. :rose:

The latest on Animal Rising and its plans to disrupt racing.

It plans to disrupt the Greyhound Derby final in a few weeks time as well:

I loved them referring to the “Ascot Derby,” all a bit Roger Nouveau (The Fast Show) at a football match – “soccer!”

Some Animal Rising-style wrong factoids –

    – The Greyhound Derby is run at a place called Toaster, so named because they put the dogs tails in a toaster to make them run faster.

    – The next protest after that will be at the “Goodwood Glorious National Meet,” where the fences must be so brutal they seem to have been hidden ahead of the fixture.

One thing I will say about greyhound racing (which has unfortunately been all-but-outlawed in the US, there are 2 tracks left in 1 state that still hold live racing and the ownership of those tracks supports legislation to run casinos without racing), those dogs love to race. Should take their muzzles off and see how the dogs deal with some lunatics getting in between them and their lure.

They might actually achieve something the sport itself can’t and get greyhound racing mentioned on the news. You think horse racing has a problem? As soon as people hear about this protest they will either say ‘there’s a Greyhound Derby?’ or ‘greyhound racing still exists?’.

The Greyhound Derby final used to be shown on BBC1 on a Saturday evening. Now even Sky Sports and its many channels does not show it. Instead, it is on a channel named Sporty Stuff which shows greyhound racing every night.

I don’t remember the Derby being on mainstream television but I do remember watching the TV Trophy on “Sportsnight”.

The protestors have a point about what happens to greyhounds after their racing days are over. But as Miss Woodford says, the dogs love racing. To suggest the sport is in itself cruel is absurd.

The greyhound is an ancient breed of sight hound – the only specific breed of dog mentioned in The Bible. It is bred to run fast after prey.

I don’t follow the sport that closely anymore but a top class greyhound running at speed is a beautiful sight.

Had many many nights at The Stow as kid , and as an adult , always a good night but those days well gone for Greyhound racing , the atmosphere was great when Scurlogue Champ raçed there .The rivalry between Ballyregan Bob was superb .
I think it was the Chandlers who owned the place for years . Only bad memory there i have is when i smashed my head on the sea saw , had to hold hanky to head wound to stop the blood while my Dad watched 8.06 race , then off to hospital , still have the scar . Greyhound racing imho will be the first to go west .

Yes, the Stow was owned by the Chandler family.

I agree the outlook for the sport is bleak. I will be surprised if it is still going in 20 years time.

When I first started going to betting shops on Saturday mornings, there were quite a few old boys watching Hackney and Crayford dogs, doing their forecasts and having a bit of banter.

Now on the rare occasions I set foot in the shops, ths greyhound racing is taking place to complete indifference. I don’t imagine it generates much money for the bookmakers nowadays and they would hardly miss it if it disappeared.

I think the top Kennels at the Stow in 80s were Mullins and Savva , memory is bit hazy on it .
Along with East 17 , what a group , The Stow features in Walthamstows other great contribution to music history with a few photos in the CD cover of Blurs Parklife.
The famous frontage is preserved .
Real Estate values i think done for London dog tracks , so many gone . Rye House held on a bit i think but is it just Romford now ? , Harlow London ish ,plenty of Mockneys there so London enough .

The Stow was at the time the whole destination package of course , Charlie Chans for a watered down drink and spin on the dance floor after the last if you had any cash left .

There are no dog tracks left in London now. Wimbledon was the last to go. Romford is still going but is not part of London.

Rye House was a fine circuit but it closed in 2006. As far as I am aware, the site is standing idle.

Mullins was still training at the Stow when it closed. Not sure where he is now. Savva moved to Milton Keynes, then went Private before taking out a contract at Henlow. I assume he has retired now.
