So Seabass can qualify because of a third in a poor 3 mile chase at Thurles, whereas 2001 winner Red Marauder would not have been allowed to line up ?
This is typical BHA – one run short of a handicap.
22 year olds should not be allowed to run.

Don’t you think Mark, that had Red Marauder been in danger of not being able to run – connections would’ve made sure some time before the race by running in the right type of races
to qualify
?
Changes to the rules stop non stayers from taking part. Something which will increase competitiveness and can only be good for the race.

Value Is EverythingFebruary 1, 2012 at 16:37 #389333Do we need two threads on the National?

They’ve given trainers a few months to ensure their horses are qualified under the new rules.
And finishing third in a race at Thurles does not prove you’re a stayer.
February 1, 2012 at 18:08 #389346Changing the subject slightly but:
Are we sure Always Waining has got the three-mile+ qualification?
Didn’t they retire State Of Play after last year’s National?
Answers, please!

So don't run, just like the others always do
February 1, 2012 at 18:18 #389350FLD, I remember thinking the same about Always Waining after his 2010 Topham win, but if I recalled correctly he won a 3 miler 4 or 5 years ago……….cause I had a lumpy wee bet on Puntal that day.

I think the plan with State of Play is the same as last year, kept fresh until Aintree. He’s been my day of the race bet the last 3 years. I’ll probably do the same this year, he’s not let me down so far.
February 1, 2012 at 18:27 #389355Always Waining has won over 3 miles+ on 3 occasions.
And Venture to Cognac is spot on re. State of Play.
February 1, 2012 at 18:37 #389357Cheers, chaps.
I’ve always had four each way for the National…I’ve got three (Shakalakaboomboom, Giles Cross, and Prince De Beauchene), and I can’t make up my mind between those two. Erk.

February 1, 2012 at 18:40 #389358Horses for courses.
February 1, 2012 at 18:44 #389359See, this where I get a bit confused…
AW has won the Topham, twice. He’s never gone in a National, though, and he looks as if he might prefer the shorter trip.
On the other hand, SOP has ran admirably and placed in three consecutive Nationals, but he’s never looked like winning. There’s no question that he can do a job and he certainly gets the trip well enough, though.
Add to that the fact it looks as if they’ll be carrying similar weights and they’re at the same price…no wonder I need a bit of a lie down.

Shakalakaboomboom is a lay for me. Doubt very much he’ll stay. Reminds me of Cloudy Lane as a 3 miler who empties shortly after, and i place laid CL for the National when he was favourite for much of the time.
That and being a stone higher since Punchestown – can’t have him.Think Mullins has the winner in his stable
Hector’s Choice is interesting but has not yet qualified – farcical

Well State of Play IMO just isn’t good enough for a National. He’ll get round and finish in the top 6 but where’s the fun in that?
I doubt Always Waining is good enough either but at least he’s got superb course form (3 wins at Aintree) and he’s also an unknown quantity.
February 1, 2012 at 21:37 #389386They did say they wouldn’t run State of Play again, so I was surprised to hear a few weeks ago that he was running again; also thought Black Apalachi had been retired. Although he probably won’t get into the race, I’m shocked that Hello Bud has an entry. I feel he should be retired or at least go hunter chasing now.
February 2, 2012 at 00:16 #389396Only two horses that I have on my shortlist, both been shrewdly looked after, JUNIOR and CHICAGO GREY.
February 2, 2012 at 00:33 #389399Moe, he probably will get in, the usual cut off is around the 77-82 mark. I think most connections would be fairly confident of their horses getting a run this year.
Hopefully he’ll cover himself in glory, before getting a well deserved retirement.
February 2, 2012 at 01:26 #389403Ginger, the owner had to really persuade his wife to allow his other horse, Silver By Nature, to take his chance in it last year. She’s not a fan of the race, so I’d imagine that may explain the horses absence.
