Chicago Grey was a long way third behind Zaidpour in a 3 mile hurdle last time. Not a bad run, obviously outpaced. Is it just me, or has he been placed this season to get a good handicap mark for this?
It’s not you. Unfortunately it simply hasn’t worked either. Dropped 1lb since his NH Chase win.
I think it’s to protect his mark, not necessarily fool the handicapper and hope he drops it.
I believe this true, whether it turns out to be right, is another matter entirely.
Extended the shortlist to:
Backstage
Cappa Bleu
Chicago Grey
Junior
Prince de Beauchene
Rare BobFebruary 4, 2012 at 21:17 #389873Where can I get the full rules of runners restrictions for the National please. Would it be the Aintree site or the BHA site?
view my thread grand national entries, all in there

February 5, 2012 at 12:30 #389933I would be very surprised if we get anything less than 40 runners on the day baring any last second withdrawals. All we can really guarantee is that we will get our first National with horses running out of the handicap in 8 years(?)
Still a very classy list and i too would love to see some full lists of years gone by
February 5, 2012 at 17:08 #389978What are peoples thoughts on Uncle Junior
February 5, 2012 at 22:16 #390010So does Alfa Beat have a legit chance? He sure is gorgeous.
Irv Naylor’s stable has absolutely dominated American racing for the past couple years, and he took the American "Grand National" hurdle last year with the Irish horse Black Jack Blues. He’s had two Maryland Hunt Cup winners, Make Me a Champ in 2005 and Askim in 2008.
Would be a nice story, anyway, if Alfa Beat won. http://lfg.live.mediaspanonline.com/ass … 0111_1.pdf
February 6, 2012 at 02:55 #390033Since Junior won at last years festival, he was the one I had my eye on for this years National.
Does anyone else however, see it as pretty inconceivable, that a horse that hasn’t yet run this year, and hasn’t jumped the National fences be 14/1 favourite?
That seems pretty unbackable to me. The value has all gone before anything has even happened.
February 6, 2012 at 03:10 #390036Yes I whole-heartedly agree with that. I like his prospects, but unbackable at the moment.
February 6, 2012 at 08:42 #390038I was watching a rerun of the Kim muir the other day and the jockey was interviewed afterwards. ‘I didn’t look behind me to be honest, I heard the crowd roar and thought there was something coming at me from the pack. I just drove him all the way to the line because the instructions were he’d stay forever’.
Oops…… I imagine Pipe would have preferred a little glance to save something from the handicapper! Also agree, unbackable. The bird has flown.
February 6, 2012 at 15:25 #390075Sometimes winning without going clear is worse, as the handicapper’s guess is more than the horse would recieve if pushed right out.
The "I’m going to win by the shortest of margins to fool the handicapper" ride can backfire. As Geraghty/Henderson/McManus found out with Darlan. Winning a Micky Mouse Taunton handicap hurdle hard held by half a length gets a hurdle mark just 2 lbs less than Triumph winner Soldatino for the Betfair Hurdle.
Serves them right!

It’s the risk coonections take.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 8, 2012 at 13:22 #390320im still liking always right got him antepost, have a few others noted down, will see what weight published tuesday are

Little Josh – to ft in with new rules, he needs to have finished in first 4 over 3 miles before 20th march, to participate

February 8, 2012 at 19:03 #390385Hi all – this is the first time I’ve posted here in about a year, its good to discuss the big NH races with some like minded people!
Anyway as far as the GN is concerned, I’m quite intrigued by the entry of CAPPA BLEU, who is relatively inexperienced (has only had 10 runs under rules) but has returned this season in pretty good heart. His win at Haydock was eye-catching, staying on to beat the useful Tamarinbleu and Killyglen, and showed to some extent he can stay extreme distances by finishing a distant third in the WN in desperate ground. He has proven class (winning the Foxhunters at Cheltenham In 2009) and provided he takes to these fences could be worth an each-way shout at 25/1. I also had a bizarre dream last night that ABBEYBRANEY won the National, albeit in JP McManus’s colours, and even though he was for some reason carrying more weight than was published! I’ve just checked the odds on offer (100/1 with sky bet) and have chucked on a couple of quid each way, stranger things have happened!
February 8, 2012 at 23:49 #390421Junior is one fast and classy horse (having won, unchallenged at both Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Festival) and jumps well.
I’ve got him at 25s, but to me, he’s still not impossible value at 14s, at least, in the amounts I bet.
But it’s good learning about some of the other horses on here from blokes with a more encyclopaedic knowledge of racing.
Cappa Bleu is classy too, isn’t he? I’d have preferred it to be a flat race…
February 9, 2012 at 00:00 #390424Grimes, you must be chuffed with your 25’s, but that 14’s will look very big if he runs well at Haydock next week, or runs a big race at Cheltenham. Granted, I appear to be the only person in the country who thinks he’s capapble of the latter.
I think I need help
Good luck!
February 10, 2012 at 12:51 #390607‘but there’s no way I’m giving up on Vic Venturi yet. He ticks every single box.’
Apparently Vic Venturi is being aimed at the Fox Hunters at Aintree not the National
