My eye was caught by Ron Wood’s comments in Friday’s Racing Post about the performance of Jean-Pierre Guillambert on Submission, fourth in a fillies’ handicap at Goodwood the previous day: “[Submission]…didn’t get a clear run in the straight, notably around 2f out, and was then given a soft ride by her jockey, particularly in the last furlong, but she still ran on. She failed by just a neck to be placed and it’s likely anyone who backed her to make the first three will not have been at all pleased with J-P Guillambert.”
Having had the opportunity to view a recording of the race today, all I can say is that I totally agree and I am amazed that the jockey’s “effort” hasn’t attracted a great deal more attention. Submission opened at 14s, touched 16s and was then backed down to 6/1 and it’s not hard to imagine that there were plenty with an each-way interest in her. They were robbed. The Post’s race reader’s comments say it all: “poor 7th and nudged along over 1f out, continued to be tenderly handled but kept on inside final furlong to press for 3rd at finish.”
The ride was a disgrace but what defies belief is the failure of the stewards to hold an enquiry. There’s no mention of one either in the Post or on the BHA’s website so I think we can take it that they saw nothing amiss. They must have been watching with their eyes shut.

This thread has the potential to get TRF in a lot of trouble.
I would suggest removing it.

No, it doesn’t but thanks for your contribution.
May 8, 2011 at 20:03 #354474Hadn’t noticed the race, so I watched it just now.
I also watched the filly’s previous three runs.
I think the ride at Goodwood was disgusting.

Number 4, Drawn 8 the horse in yellow with blue stars,

Never at the races that one, hard held for 6 of the 8 furlongs then very tenderly asked to make further progress all too late, defineately worthy of a question or 2 from the stewards imo.
May 8, 2011 at 20:44 #354480Mr W – I don’t have a problem with the thread as it stands (the posts above).
May 8, 2011 at 21:05 #354485just had a look at this must say it does not look good maybe he thought his chance of a place was gone as he still had a lot to do 2 furlongs out but must agree the stewards should have looked at this

As disgraceful a ride as you’re ever likely to see, Casela Park aside. Guillambert makes no effort at any stage. He even takes a pull as they turn in to the straight before switching the horse to the far rail where it’s immediately obvious he won’t get a run.
It’s almost comical that the stewards missed it (not that they’d have done anything anyway).

What on earth gave you that idea, Mr W?
Incredible how the ‘ride’ has somehow slipped under the radar.
Nothing
wrong
with threads like these at all. Infact, anyone who genuinely cares about the future of racing should be glad someones has bothered to highlight it. But there you go!
May 8, 2011 at 21:59 #354511Maybe she doesn’t respond to being hard ridden.
After all, she won her maiden without too much fuss & was last time out was in a race she really wasn’t good enough to be involved in.Still, I don’t think I’d have been too happy if I’d backed her e.w

Lets talk more about inconspicuous rides then.
I’m all for it.
Do you believe this was a genuine mistake by the jockey or more too it?

If she was a type not to respond to being hard ridden it was a bad idea by the jockey to get blocked on the inside behind a wall of horses, because usually by the time you might get a gap your lucky if you haven’t got quite a bit of ground to make up.

Writing this off as a mistake implies a misjudgement – easing down too early, for instance, or mistiming a challenge – on Guillambert’s part. Given that he made no attempt to make the horse competitive and even manoeuvred her to the far rail where he was never going to get a run, how can the term ‘mistake’ be used?
May 8, 2011 at 22:29 #354521I’m so glad that other people have noticed this. When they didn’t call a stewards inquiry and nothing was said about the ride, I thought maybe I was been a bit picky because I felt hard done by as I was done out of an e/w place!
But to me, it almost seemed as if he ducked the horse under more cover as she was just coming into a stride. It also seemed as if he was riding for a few strides…took a pull..rode for a few more..took another pull, and then when the race was out of reach he let her do her thing. I actually couldn’t believe what I was seeing, a shocking ride!

AJ,
If this is not a mistake then what are you trying to imply?

I’m not saying anything, MRW, merely that, in my opinion, the term ‘mistake’ would appear to be inaccurate in this instance.
I have emailed Mr Cumani for clarification.
