Some interesting numbers in an interview with Adam Waterworth in the latest edition of OwnerBreeder magazine, which I get through the ROA.
“The Festival of Speed is the biggest car culture event in the world and attracts 240,000 people over four days, so it’s on a completely different level to racing here. The Revival gets 160,000 over three days and for comparison, Glorious gets 100,000 to 120,000 over five days and racecourse is perhaps 200,000 over the full season.”
Then later in the piece:
“While demand in motor sport continues to grow, horseracing is stalling. Our members are incredibly supportive and the top end is fine, but in the Gordon and Lennox enclosures it’s a real struggle. I think people still want to do these things, but many can’t afford to and so ticket sales at that end of the market are lower than I’ve ever known them. Horseracing is in a diffcult place one way and another.”
He also mentions that this year is the last of the current deal with Qatar and no renewal has yet been agreed.
Waterworth is ‘Events Managing Director’ at Goodwood and has been there since 2010, with previous spells at Cheltenham, HUntingdon, Haydock and Doncaster.
July 11, 2023 at 17:03 #1655039Concerning to hear about the Gordon and Lennox enclosures. But I cannot pretend to be sad to hear that a sponsorship deal with a human rights abusing tyranny and supporter of international terrorism might not be renewed.
July 11, 2023 at 17:22 #1655044I wonder who the next sponsor might be.
I always thought “Wagner Goodwood Festival” had a ring to it.
They could play “Ride Of The Valkyries” as the field went to post for the Sussex Stakes

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 11, 2023 at 18:08 #1655047Sponsor is just a name, good luck to them, they make money from it
I just call it Glorious Goodwood Festival, myself
If Cheltenham Festival had a sponsor how many people would use it.?
I wouldn’t waste the keyboard typing it out
They will be sponsoring horses nextRichard Holies “Paddington sponsored by Robertson’s Golden Shred Fine Cut Marmalade, takes the lead with a furlong to go”
“but up on the outside looms Mostahdaf sponsored by Chezza, I was at 20’s at Royal Ascot you peasants Davies”
“Its going to be a head bobbler with Mostahdaf sponsored by Chezza, I was at 20’s at Royal Ascot you peasants Davies leading Paddington sponsored by Robertson’s Golden Shred Fine Cut Marmalade, Paddington sponsored by Robertson’s Golden Shred Fine Cut Marmalade is fading in the last 50 yards or is it Mostahdaf sponsored by Chezza, I was at 20’s at Royal Ascot you peasants Davies asserting
either way Mostahdaf sponsored by Chezza, I was at 20’s at Royal Ascot you peasants Davies wins by 2 lengths, in second place Paddington sponsored by Robertson’s Golden Shred Fine Cut Marmalade has run in heart out and brininging up the rear some 2 furlongs behind is Al Asifah sponsored by Nathan Hughes thought this horse could win the 2024 Arc oh dear”Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

“CPAP for the commentator please”
July 12, 2023 at 09:25 #1655074With them charging £55 to get into the Gordon enclosure when you can only access half the parade ring and winners enclosure,I’m not surprised.
Better value to go to the King George at Ascot the previous Saturday for £30.July 12, 2023 at 09:50 #1655076Tend to agree with runandskip.
My summary of three premier tracks based on past experience.
Goodwood – Lovely venue (when sunny!), but rip-off admission prices, even on quiet days.
Epsom – Derby Day is amazing but the only day at any racecourse where I’ve known them demand colossal admission and even charged for children too, worst of the lot.
Ascot – Amazingly the best of the trio. Expensive, but not overly so and kids go free, even at the Royal meeting. The overall depth of quality of racing is ten times better than Glorious Goodwood too.

Over 50 notes spent before they’ve even left the house for what sounds like a mediocre enclosure most certainly isn’t.
The money is there despite everything, it’s just not being spent on racing, which is gradually fading from public consciousness. Once Dettori is gone, what active jockey would your average member of the public be able to name? Nobody.
