Your instincts were right which is good.
Years ago I was at Newmarket and there was a 2 year old maiden. One in particular caught my eye in the paddock – a son of Zafonic I think he was. Anyway I liked the look of him and went to have a few quid with the tote. He was 50-1. I thought – he cant win at that price and left him alone. The rest as they say…….

August 20, 2011 at 22:59 #368773Whilst the majority of racing fans were congregating on York on Tuesday, the Nottingham die hards turned out for ‘Family day’.We were rewarded with a summers day and a bouncy slide castle that kept my 2yo entertained, albeit ensuring i missed the 1st 3 races,i did manage to see
Seville
run like a pig up at York on the big screen though, was i surprised?,No,i was surprised he went off odds on though, was i surprised
Sea Moon
won?,not at all,i couldn’t believe his price either.Having supported Hayley on both Creme Anglaise and Joe Strummer and having watched both get left with plenty to do to finish placed i thought i’d have a chat with her, typical Hayley, she always finds time to talk but it was quite apparent she was knackered,i congratulated her on the awesome ride she gave Ridgeway Sapphire at Brighton the day before but she openly admitted to feeling drained from her sorte to Chicago,i wished her luck on her last mount and wandered off to bet it.From the off it was quite apparent different tactics were being employed on the appropriately named
Adorable Choice
and in complete contrast to Ridgeway sapphires victory, this filly was allowed to bowl along in front, the clock shows Hayley basically stole it from the front by setting a pace to suit herself and those of us who kept the faith,(and there were very few) were rewarded at 25/1!
Its common knowledge to some of us at Nottingham that the Bookies accomodate the ‘Hayley factor’into their pricing up of a race, they made a boo boo this time.Of course i was the 1st and virtually only person to congratulate her on yet another peach of a ride,it was great to see her smiling again,we spoke a bit more about her going straight up to York that night and her rides for the week. There was one in particular,Nathan knows!

Smart, funny and very modest. Next time you see her say hi from Jon at Speak The Speech!

August 21, 2011 at 20:31 #368858There’s a lot of debate recently, more so than ever about the state of the ground at Racecourses,Richard Hughes tells it as it is in his Saturday RP column,i know for a fact that flat racing jockeys much prefer to race on Good fast ground rather than soft so naturally when a COC says the course has been watered and gives the going out as good and its not,Jockeys in particular take offence,i have always judged horses by the clock so i will take into consideration the first couple of race times of a meeting and make my own judgement then, the ground has a massive impact on a punters decision as to what to back so again it leads to more frustration of these COC’s who are giving what seems like an unbelievable going report.Without doubt the best ‘exaggerater’ of official going reports is Simon Claisse,i have lost count how many times he starts a meeting on Good/Soft and by the end of it,its turned to the faster side of Good! The Clock never lies at this game particularly when evaluating a 6 card meeting,so if the official going was Good and every race was run 2 seconds and over standard then it aint Good at all!
Nottingham last week was never Gd/Frm,it was Good and Epsom again last Thursday was officilly Good but was defineately Soft and as for York on Thursday starting out Good/Soft then changing to Good later on,that was the complete opposite of reality!! whats ‘Going’on Ffs?August 21, 2011 at 21:41 #368860I see you don’t wear your crown at Nottingham races Gord………

That is wrong in my opinion.
Like you King, I like to look at the first couple of times on a card to judge going. However, the clock CAN lie.
Pace can make a big difference to over all time. A slowly run race at 1 1/2 miles can easily put seven or eight seconds on to a time. Any race, even sprints can be comparitively slowly run. It is vital to judge whether a race had a true or slow pace. Though of course all races on a card are unlikely to be slowly run. A punter also has to take in to account the quality of runners. Standard times are not based on grade 6 horses. So ground conditions can be firmer than times suggest, though never softer. Well, I say never…..
There is also wind speed and direction to consider. A fairly strong headwind can slow them dramatically. Not only is it the speed of wind, but jockeys don’t want to be in front. As it is usually best to shelter from a headwind. So it can be good-firm ground with times you’d expect for good-soft. Where as a tailwind obviously speeds things up and favours front-runners. Horses finding it difficult to catch up. Leading to times faster than you’d expect for the surface.
Agree Clerks do get it wrong with regularity. And times can give an accurate picture of going conditions, but not always.

You are quite right Ginger, this years 2000gns certainly proved that, what i have found though over the years is that the clock is certainly a reliable piece of the Jigsaw and i turn to it still.I know i like to harp on about
Workforce
but that Derby performance of his marked him down as a bit special and after his defeat in the King George to Harbinger it was the ‘Clock’ i kept turning to just for reassurance that he would win the Arc.I wouldn’t put anyone off him winning it again this year and at 7/1 he is a cracking price,Nathaniel will make up into a super 4yo but at the 7/1 also available for the Arc i know which one i’m on!
Nathan,on what i have contributed to this thread in selections i’m not worthy of a crown,i’ll turn it round,i always do!
Wildman, nice to see you still showing an interest,my latest thought is wouldn’t it be great to get Hayley the ride onDeacon Blues
in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup,3 Group 1 sprint winners in a season on 3 different horses would be historical!
August 23, 2011 at 11:06 #368945Agreed, I am constantly looking for good time performances (compared to going). Workforce certainly proved he was a good horse at Epsom. Unfortunately I was put off his Arc prospects last term by mixed messages from the yard.
Am already on him this year though.Time can also pinpoint good two year olds before they’ve run in pattern races. My Propeller put up an excellent time performance in a maiden at Pontefract in June, showing great speed. Always going to prove equally, if not more effective at 5f and duly proved it at York this week.

Just what might Hayley Turner be thinking as our TAPK snuggles up to her in the photo above?

Value Is EverythingAugust 24, 2011 at 18:40 #369095Its a 140 miles from Chepstow to Kempton and traffic pending can take up to 3 hours to cover,Hayley having ridden 3 more winners today down in Wales is making the effort for just the one ride tonight at 7,50pm.
Journalistic
went off an unfancied 20/1 on his debut but this Marcus Tregoning colt is expected to fair much better on a surface he was bred for,as far as All weather breeding goes this 2yo’s doesn’t get any better, his Sire
Street Sense
a son of Street Cry won the Breeders Cup juvenile by 10l and his Dams Sire
Tabasco Cat
was pipped in a Breeders Cup classic, some breeding,i hope the journeys worth the effort!
There’s a race in this fellow but it will be over a mile + for sure.He never featured there until the race was over!

I have tried to bring the picture over to this page Corm but failed miserably! The funny thing is i did actually say something very rude to her as the pictures were taken, this is just one of a sequence as you can see from me talking out the side of my mouth! Hayley is as game as they come, rest assured!
