hi all, i have had some success betting on pga and euro tour golf for last two years, main attractions being…good prices, abundance of stats and the fact my bets lasted a minimum of two days and hopefully all four days. had several big priced winners/placed but overall losses began to out balance winnings. not want to give up on golf just yet so here i am. my platform for selections is: 1, top 30 finish in last 6 weeks, 2, at least 1 top 30 finish in corresponding tournement in last 3 years (same course) 3, recent individual player stats (gir, driving, putts etc) in relation to previous course/tournement winners. this normally left 2-5 players in each tourny( pga & euro) personal preference was 2-3 max in each tourny in e/w singles + doubles, always worth doing small e/w doubles as if you hit just once due to big prices it will be really big hit. as i said this had some success but was always going to have limitations.
does anyone else who bets on golf have any views or suggestions ?January 26, 2011 at 16:56 #337757I think your strategy is ok, you won’t go far wrong. The one thing you have to remember is that anything can happen in golf and that 100/1+ winners will happen far more in this sport than in any other sport.
Me and my mates get together each week and talk about forthcoming tournaments, and you can see our views on the betting.betfair site;

Steve (The Punter) is in particularly good form at the moment, though I’m a few over par for the season so far
Good luck with your bets.
January 26, 2011 at 17:11 #337760many thanks oneEye, will certainly check it out, as for 100/1+ winners, i think it is part of the attraction as always a minimum of 5 places up for grabs
January 26, 2011 at 17:24 #337761It definitely is searcher. My biggest win was on Retief Goosen to win the US Open when he won it for the first time – I was on at 150/1 despite him being one of the top players on the European Tour at the time.
Golf is also the best sport in the world for betting in-running. I went to the bookies last Friday and backed Gary Woodman at 100/1 to win last week’s Bob Hope Classic yet he was already in contention after round one. He eventually lost in a play-off, and I didn’t back him e/w or lay him on Betfair so it was painful, but it just goes to show you can back players in contention at great prices. Name another sport where you can do that? You can’t.
Some of my best profits have come from backing players on a weekend. I always take the view that if a player is in contention after two rounds then he is capable of being in contention after four rounds. But in some cases you can back the leader of the tournament (depending on who it is of course) at double figure odds. Golf betting is my love, despite football being my favourite sport.
January 26, 2011 at 22:42 #337835all so very true oneEye, 150+ ronners most weeks, you can`t help but find some real value especially if you can shop around some.
managed a few winners last season but missed out on the double (pga & euro) in same week as that would have been the BIG result. but even the place bets can be very profitable.
do you work on a system basis or a personal fancy/knowledge to make initial selections ??January 26, 2011 at 22:51 #337839Tiger is back folks…
3.8 on Betfair is a hell of a skinny price.
January 27, 2011 at 01:01 #337853even before his personal problems he was silly odds, at least if he`s in the field, everybody elses odds are longer ruby
January 27, 2011 at 01:09 #337854I probaly will end up backing him i reckon.
Dont know why but i think their seems to be alot of confidence around so early it be hard to ignore the market
January 27, 2011 at 12:07 #337885good luck with that ruby, usually confidence in certain quarters re tiger….
oneEye..re your comments about betting after the cut…..
quick bit of research last night…………
66% of tournement winners (pga + euro) were tied 3rd or better after the cut ???? perhaps obvious but still VERY interesting wouldn`t you agree ??January 30, 2011 at 17:15 #338383Have not backed tiger but seriously considering now hitting into phil at 7/4. The opposition are closers and he is playing good at the moment.
That or kim in the top 5 at 4/6. He is a incredible talent but just a bit cautious after his injured wrist.
January 31, 2011 at 15:30 #338511backed mick @ 5/1 & jimenez @ 8/1 early sat morning………..
both second….DOH !! -
