“Moehat, Kauto Star was found to be injured after he was remounted in a race in 2005, and this led to the rules around remounting being strengthened. However, it was not until 2009 that a full ban was introduced”.
And it was the race where we lost Best Mate. I’ll never forget that day. I didn’t realise it took so long to implement a full ban.April 11, 2026 at 14:39 #1763112Best Mate was lost in the Haldon Gold Cup.
April 12, 2026 at 20:33 #1763439I had almost forgotten but someone made a good point online about an identical error made by El Fabiolo in the 2024 Champion Chase. Townend immediately pulled the horse up and this was his explanation to the stewards;
“Jockey said gelding made a bad mistake at fifth fence, having lost all momentum and considering the manner in which gelding stumbled he felt it prudent to pull up”
April 12, 2026 at 20:35 #1763441Yes at the 5th fence not the last fence 10 lengths clear.
April 12, 2026 at 20:43 #1763443Precisely my point and that of the online poster
April 12, 2026 at 21:27 #1763454Astralcharmer – I happened to make the following post earlier today on RacingTV’s YouTube channel Talking Points video:-
“It is interesting to watch what Townend immeditaely did on El Fabiolo early on in the Champion Chase when he made a similar hind legs sprawling mistake at the fence going away from the stands………..food for thought”.
April 13, 2026 at 00:34 #1763463Moehat, the Kauto Star remounting incident where he was injured was in a novice chase on 31/1/2005.
Best Mate died in the Haldon Gold Cup on 1/11/2005. You probably have that race in mind as it is where Kauto Star made his comeback from the injury, finishing second to Monkerhostin.
I had forgotten that Best Mate and Kauto Star ever ran in the same race. What a shame it ended so sadly.

The point I’d make LD73 is that on both occasions Townend wouldn’t have been totally aware of what had actually happened, only that the back end went down and it all happened in a split second.
At Cheltenham it was early in the race, but had that happened jumping the last comfortably in front, I’d suggest his decision would have been different.
Prudent at the fifth fence when any real chance was gone, a different matter 200 or so yards from the winning post of a prestigious race.
