    “Is he sure to stay?”

Not a spring horse, actually reported to lose weight that time of year, never won at Cheltenham AND, yes, not certain to stay.

    What can go wrong?

No mention of Hewick on here, obviously not tied into any lines of form.

Great story for the press though…USA National Winner wins Gold Cup.

For me having BMG anti post, now is the time to wait to for the day, prices will change, some will drift, no value anymore to have a bet.

    Only “sometimes?”

It’s actually a fascinating Cheltenham Gold Cup.

I’d love to feel able to oppose the favourite, but I’m really not sure what with.

A return to peak form from A Plus Tard or even Minella Indo would make the jolly work.

That’s the beauty of this gold cup Ian! Would any of APT, BMG, Noble Yeats, protektorat, sounds Russian, royal pagaille, stattler or ahoy senor winning be a huge shock?

Some would be a bigger than others granted but its fascinating because every runner in the front dozen has its foibles.

I would have to agree with you there, TC.

And the words “shock” and “Cheltenham Gold Cup” compel me to bore you into a coma with a little loosely-relevant story.

The year is 1988 and I’m working on The Guardian racing desk.

As I’m giving it nauseatingly large about what a Point-to-Point/Hunter Chase expert I am, they let me do the tips for Leicester’s Hunter Chase meeting.

I then get the train to Leicester from London the next day to attend.

All is going VERY well – I’ve tipped the first five winners and I just need the winner of the last, a Maiden Hunters’ Chase, to go through the card and return to London in triumph, with an even more insufferable ego than usual.

But my selection trialled in a well-beaten fifth.

Somewhat vexing, therefore, when the very same horse won THE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP
at 100/1 a couple of years later!

Good old Norton’s Coin – beat Desert Orchid, but couldn’t win a Maiden Hunters’ Chase when I needed him to.

    That’s racing!

For me at this stage GDC is the most likely winner as he has far less if, buts and maybes about him than anything else – have to say though my initial reaction on him passing the post at the DRF was…..hmmm he didn’t pick up from the 2nd last and blitz them as I was expecting.

But having re-watched it a few times I think that they have either managed to get him to be so switched off (or he has just matured from the blast off from the front version last season) that it wasn’t until Townend finally resorted to giving him a smack after the last that he really picked up and by the line he was really just geting going to the extent it took almost a furlong or so for him to consent to being pulled up.

He is not a backable price but with him being so surprisingly tractable this season, the stamina question (which I really think would have been a huge issue if we were talking about last season version of GDC) doesn’t worry me as I think he will be ridden pretty much the same way as he was at Leopardstown and unlike some of the more stouter stayers he will have the tactical speed not to get outpaced coming down the hill.

APT & to a lesser extent Minella Indo are strangely enough to me the dark horses in the race as a return to anywhere near their respective bests would see them both bang in the mix.

On recent interviews that I saw Paul Nicholls and Dan Skelton were feeling optimistic about their horses. Though both said they had every chance ‘away from the favourite’.

Gotta love how Mike reads trainer interviews the way others read the form book – bigging up their horses because they know the owners will be reading, but covering themselves in case they get beat: it’s all flannel, mate, the facts are in the book!

If he has maintained his weight this year as Nicholls has said then BMG should be clear second fav

Now that IS something worth reading – Bravemansgame has never won a race after February in the spring of a Jumps season and was reported to have inexplicably lost weight during that period in the past.

If that’s no longer the case, he MIGHT be in with a shout.

“was reported to have inexplicably lost weight during that period in the past.”

It wasn’t inexplicable, he had grade 4/4 stomach ulcers.

” I’d love to feel able to oppose the favourite, but I’m really not sure what with ”

I’ve been a huge fan of GDC for a couple of seasons and called him for last year’s Turners quite early in the season. He’s traveling and moving into his races differently this year and won the Irish Gold Cup convincingly but that wasn’t a great race ( not is it a great ” trial ” for Cheltenham ) and, whilst I can see him winning it, I think there’s also a chance he tires after the turn for home

Stattler is a strong stayer and could pass his classier stablemate late on, whilst he’s also less ground dependent than GDC

My first ante-posts have come in this.

Hewick has the stamina to win a bet365 Gold Cup and the pace to win a Galway Plate. You can make what you want of the American National, but he still went out there and won it. I get a big hint of Synchronised off him and I think 20/1 is a very welcoming price.

I was there the day Noble Yeats won the Many Clouds chase and you had to be there to truly appreciate his turn of foot between the last two fences. The tv footage doesn’t do it justice. Another with no stamina doubts. My only concern is he doesn’t always travel with conviction, but if Sean Bowen can keep him interested; I can see him flying up the hill.

Bravemansgame has done nothing wrong this season, but has become a bit of target practice for those who prefer others. I have no stamina doubts over him whatsoever and I can’t have it that he hates Cheltenham after just the one run.

They’ll be my three in what looks a fabulous renewal. Possibly the best lineup since 2011 if everything shows up. Had Nicky Henderson not lost his nerve after the Altior incident; he may well have opted for this over the Ryanair for Shishkin; then we would have an all time renewal on our hands.

Cant say i agree peter, think its a very poor renewal, hewick/BMG etc all just showing up with excellent credentials elsewhere, but no hopers in this,

I like the stattler angle though, but the way GDC looked after the line the last day was surprising, he looked to have plenty left,

I wont actually have a bet in this before the race, i might latch onto stattler place in running or something

GDC is a backable price for me, for all im happy backing ar any price if i feel atrongly on it, this would be one of the races id avoide a short price in
