Two names spring to mind immediately when it comes to novices.
Namely Grand Crus and Peddler’s Cross who bitterly disappointed at the Festival.
For me with those two running so badly it leaves a huge doubt in my mind about just how good Bob’s Worth and SDS really are.
Bob’s Worth certainly wouldn’t get within a fence of Long Run RSA winner or not. He simply is not in the same league. A year on he could improve but in time his RSA form beating First Lieutenant may not be that much better than his 2nd to Invictus. He does stay well which was a huge asset to him at the festival but a Gold Cup horse? That I doubt very very much. I expect to see him run in the likes of the Hennessy and maybe the National in the future but he is a tad on the slow side for a Gold Cup IMO
SDS is a nice horse but his win over Champion Court doesn’t read anywhere near good enough to be thinking Gold Cup’s just yet.
Other novices such as Al Ferof, Hunt Ball, Invictus, Bog Warrior, Peddler’s Cross, Grand Crus and maybe even Flemenstar and Cue Card if they stay have as good if not better claims to Gold Cup fame.
Great prediction, so spot on!
March 15, 2013 at 20:39 #433042got home from work and watched the replay .. SC went down on his head and i was horrified. Thank god he got up. Hes safe and sound and back in his stable – thats all I care about. When they come down the hill stamina tells and those tired legs dont pick up on a tired horse – thats why its the ultimate test for pure class horses. Time and time again those big fences, the pace, the distance and the up and down nature of the course, its why it takes a special horse to win. Speed, jumping ability, stamina qualities and most importantly of all heart. SC couldnt pick his legs up – he was tired or it was jumping ability in that ground – there is no hiding place in the gold cup.
The winner stuck his neck out .. loved it and went away. The giant Bolster is a good yardstick – came there with every chance and couldnt get close – he faded on the ground. I think the ground was a factor but plenty of others has a chance if they were good enough – they wernt.
Cheltenham is a special place and Bobs Worth is a worthy winner – he loves it round here. The juveniles have taken over – SDC ran on past beaten horses.
Stamina, heart and ability won him this race, nothing lucky about it – well done.

wonder what happened to hurdygurdy anyway, miss his banter.
fair enough the young fella, I think sil conti is a major force at the top level just a suspicion he’ll continue to prefer flat tracks, i’d certainly back him at aintree if he turns up.
you are right about the hurricane fly thing, actually him and bobs worth ran very similar races, just from an personal thing i’d prefer to back horses like that who might get niggled, might make the occasional mistake, but get the job where it matters to those horses who cruise along on the bridle and never touch a twig, instinctively i’m wary of that type.
which might explain why I put up the fly as my lay of the meeting
March 15, 2013 at 21:31 #433064Just like to say well done to Bobs Worth, connections and all who backed him. I was on Silviniaco Conti and again it’s what could have been! Hopefully back next year to show how good he really is.
March 15, 2013 at 21:41 #433072Only fair to come on here and say massive well done to Bob’s Worth and his connections.
That combination of class and toughness is rare. Did not look to be going as well as the two in front, but his will to win is impressive. He’ll never be flashy but he’s all heart.
I thought Sir Des Champs ran a game race as well, and no excuses. I can’t see him beating the winner on any ground.
At least we can now agree that Long Run’s best days are behind him.
I’m sunbathing in the "Silvanio Conti would not have won/stayed" camp – FWIW.

March 16, 2013 at 10:02 #433149Backed them all season coupled and they finish 1-2. That’s some vindication after Boston Bob, Grandouet and My Tent or Yours made it a very disappointing week.
March 16, 2013 at 21:39 #433247Yes, bring back Fist (Hurdygurdyman / whatevahisnameisnow)…he was good value.
Is he still reading these forums?
He told us all about Sprinter Sacre before the horse was even born!!

March 16, 2013 at 22:48 #433266Be hard not to see him regain the Cup next year, only horse I could see challenging him would be as he is still an unknown quantity and going well at the time when he fell was Silviniaco Conti who looks his main rival I would say, Sir Des Champs may improve on good but he would have to improve a lot to beat Bobs Worth.
If Tidal Bay was actually fit, Nicholls would have made a massive mistake not running him yesterday.
March 16, 2013 at 22:50 #433267how does back in focus fit into the general scheme of things
