We’ve had plenty of threads on here over the years about the Godolphin policy of buying up top horses and then failing to achieve much with them. So it must be rather frustrating for them to learn that this year they managed to sell a Derby winner to Peter Bowen.
The horse in question is called Daytona, an Indian Ridge colt that cost 360,000 Euros as a yearling. He won a Lingfield AW maiden for Mark Johnston back in March at the third attempt and looked no more than a useful handicapper.
He was sent to the Doncaster Lincoln sales at the end of March and was sold to Peter Bowen for 56,000gns. Quite how he ended up in California instead of Pembrokeshire, I’ve no idea, but last night on his third start in the US, he won the Hollywood Derby, worth $500,000, by half a length from our old friend Medici Code. The race was run over 10F on firm turf and the winner made all the running.
On the same card at Hollywood, another AW maiden winner, Monzante, made a successful US debut in a conditions, having been sold for 100,000gns at the Newmarket July sales.

November 26, 2007 at 08:15 #127095Daytona beat another ex Brit, the ex Jamie Osborne Ten A Penny to win the Oak Tree Derby on his previous run. Can’t help thinking drugs have a major effect on many of these performances.
November 26, 2007 at 10:24 #127127Or maybe they should have just tried running him on turf?
November 26, 2007 at 13:53 #127180The drug point is emphasised by the fact that Medici Code has recently been disqualified from two earlier races in California following a finding that he had ‘excessive levels of clenbuterol’ in his system.
Which suggests that there is an acceptable level of clenbuterol that wouldn’t result in any action.

November 26, 2007 at 15:38 #127206I watched Capricorn Run win again on Saturday. I would think that the horse would be worth a fortune in the States now with there increasing number of Polytrack courses and his style of running so I am surprised he is still plying his trade over here.
November 26, 2007 at 21:20 #127293Is Ashkal Way still owned by Godolphin in Amercia? I think he should be brought back to uk or Ireland to be sent novice hurdling. I saw him win a handicap at Beverley in 2005 and I thought he would make a Triumph Hurdle horse the following year this was before Godolphin got thier chequebooks. Lets hope someone like JP McManus snaps him up assuming he is still in training.
November 26, 2007 at 21:25 #127294Ashkal Way was with Godolphin but he’s been retired within the last week and given to Jeannine Edwards who’s one of the racing journo’s in the US, he’s going to be used as a riding horse.
Glad he’s getting a well earned retirement
November 26, 2007 at 21:36 #127299Ashkal Way was retired in August after failing to respond to treatment for an off-fore tendon injury suffered in April. I remeber him slashing up in the valuable 3yo Beverley handicap for 5-lb claimer Chris Hayes. I guess you could say they both went on to better things!
