“If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed will go to the mountain”
Quite ironic when you think about it
October 5, 2017 at 22:12 #1320317Forget Coolmore and Godolphin, this is great news for the thoroughbred breed. Brilliant.
I propose John Ferguson as first nomination for ‘Villain of the Year’.
October 5, 2017 at 23:30 #1320320I doubt that Godolphin mares will be going to Galileo, I think that would be a step too far for Sheikh Mohammed. Particularly as Coolmore don’t support outside stallions to any great extent and that was the main reason for Sheikh Mohammed’s boycott. Also, the vast majority of Galileo’s book is composed of either Coolmore associated mares or foal shares, and Godolphin won’t go along with foal shares. Galileo covered about 120 Coolmore associated mares this year, so fewer and fewer independently bred foals will make it to the sales. Indeed, he could very soon be covering only mares belonging to Coolmore and their associates. In the meantime, as has been the case to date, not many good ones will escape them at the sales, they have the inside track. I think Godolphin have missed the boat on Galileo. But they may still have a chance with the likes of Australia and Camelot whose progeny they have also been buying this week.
October 6, 2017 at 02:07 #1320324The main reason he boycotted coolmore is coolmore didn’t support the Dubai festival it was a few years they started to again breaking the ice …to think sheik Mohamed brought I think 5 Galileos for close £10 million when he could get his mares covered for around £600000k it makes logical sense the reason there’s not a lot of outside galileos is his covering fee. There is no way coolmore would turn away SM when juddmonte have been going to Galileo with greatness success of course. Can we define associate mares basically coolmore just dot there mares around different breeding farms Owned by them get them covered by Galileo send them to the sales buy them back 9/10 this £4.2 million Galileo was a tough one to let go they got burnt for once! this practice is all about avoiding Tax along the way crafty !! This filly is going to be top top top class and coolmore know it.
October 6, 2017 at 08:01 #1320333Works both ways though. It’ll take a few years for godolphin to be competitive. If the thaw is a complete one then then the magnier could send the likes of found, minding seventh heaven etc to be covered by dubawi and no doubt that could produce champions. Remember aiden usually gets 50 odd galileos who are half and full brothers to the likes of Gleneagles etc. Such a pity we lost scat daddy and the great St nic as that would have provided aiden some sure fire champions and of course for us all to enjoy.
October 6, 2017 at 08:15 #1320334BTW juddmonte only got Frankel as it was a gentlemans agreement regards who buys which galileo juddmonte crosses. It was only a twist of fate that stopped Frankel ending up at ballydoyle ad no doubt will happen again when one of the lesser buys turns out to be the best.
October 6, 2017 at 14:31 #1320367Is there anything written about that Micky because my understanding is Juddmonte owned Kind and sent her to Galileo produceing Frankel and noble mission I would like to see proof that wasn’t the case ??
October 6, 2017 at 15:36 #1320369Mickeyjp is indeed correct.
Coolmore chose Await The Dawn instead of Frankel. Heads or tails
October 6, 2017 at 15:40 #1320370I’m shocked at that
Is there anything written about it ?October 6, 2017 at 15:42 #1320371Await the dwan, Frankel, Coolmore should give the answer
October 6, 2017 at 16:40 #1320377Not quite right. Coolmore didn’t choose Await the Dawn instead of Frankel as they were born in different years. Juddmonte were lucky that they got to pick in Frankel’s year.
“For several years Juddmonte would send ten of its mares to Sadler’s Wells and then other star Coolmore sires. Coolmore would have the pick of the foal crop one year and then Juddmonte would have first choice the following year. In 2007 Coolmore chose Await The Dawn and the following year Juddmonte elected to keep Frankel”.October 6, 2017 at 19:52 #1320398It’s part of the same deal that resulted in Coolmore having 15 nominations to Frankel.
There’s no way that the likes of Minding etc will be going to Dubawi. The Galileo mares and other top mares will be going to War Front (Coolmore own a significant share in him), American Pharaoh and Uncle Mo, as they have this year, until Coolmore have their own cross in Europe for their Galileo mares. No Nay Never has proved extremely popular at the sales this year, and Caravaggio is a better racehorse, better specimen and better bred than him (and Scat Daddy), and Coolmore love the damsire, Holy Bull.
And Coolmore will be protecting the golden goose/gander and his golden eggs, he will be 20 next year, and though he could continue for several more years like his sire, they will probably start to limit his book. Thanks to Sheikh Mo’s bidding yesterday, they can now raise his fee and the owner/breeders who have remained faithful will be first in the queue for the few available non-Coolmore covers.
Regarding the sales, when was the last time, if ever, that a top Galileo was bought at the sales and didn’t race for Coolmore? I’m struggling to think of one. They cast their net pretty wide, not many top prospects make it to the sales, there were only a few non-Coolmore Galileos that fetched more than 500K this week.
The filly yesterday was a lovely filly, but the dam was a 1m2f horse, who won nothing of significance until a listed race late in her 3yo season. And the Galileo x Dansili cross has produced very little in comparison to the cross with Danehill himself, Danehill Dancer, Storm Cat, and a number of other crosses. The dam is not typical of the fast precocious mares from those crosses that Coolmore themselves are sending to Galileo with such success.
Next year, there will be full sisters to Minding, Found, Winter, Misty For Me, Hydrangea, etc. in Ballydoyle. Good luck running against them!
I’m not sure that Coolmore are that worried, I’d imagine they’re busy working out the 2018 fees for Galileo, Australia, etc based on Godolphin’s support this week at the sales. One thing of interest. Who will Sheikh Mo send her to? The very expensive purchases are usually sent to Appleby and Bin Suroor (Appleby more recently), and not to send her to either of them would be a sign of little faith in his own trainers. But if I owned her, I’d prefer to see her with Gosden. The Galileos aren’t straightforward to train, as Aidan has said, they are easily ruined because they are too willing. He has honed the training of the fillies, in particular, to an art form, seeing how Clemmie and Happily have progressed this year.

Certainly would of been a heads or tails scenario though.
Another point i recall was the actual agreement involved Saddlers Wells as the original Sire. Prior to the start of the duties SW became poorly and it was agreed that Galileo & Montjeau would take his place.
The rest is history

I assume you are talking about the Galileo filly that Godolphin purchased for 4 million guineas? The filly is actually out of Dank, who is a multiple Group winning racemare and winner of the Grade 1 Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Turf. The filly has been given the name ‘Gloam,’ which sounds quite ugly but has a rather nice meaning to it.
And good news, the filly has gone to John Gosden, it was actually he who done the bidding on behalf of Godolphin.
October 6, 2017 at 23:54 #1320438Yes, Dank is the dam, she was a late bloomer, won 2 races over 10f in the US as a 4yo. I’m not sure that it has been decided yet who will train her. John Gosden was asked yesterday and he said “Nothing of that nature has been decided at all. That will be done some time in the autumn.”
October 7, 2017 at 01:07 #1320450Forgive me you are correct, I assumed it would be Gosden.
