Quick question – what is the purpose of teh ‘saver’? Is it to protect the bank against losing runs?

Well, sort of David. Savers are “value”, but usually what I consider lesser value bets, so it may well be best to concentrate on the very best value bet/s (main bets) in each race. I would not mind “long losing runs” if it wasn’t for one thing; they can affect confidence and therefore subconciously affecting the way I study/evaluate form, leading to believing the wrong horses are value. So the savers are really for my benefit, to keep me looking at races in the same profitable manner. For anyone else following my tips, suspect Trying is doing the right thing in ignoring the savers. Don’t know about the shorties though, over the years found shorties very profitable but may be it’s changed. Although the reason there’s generally no bets shorter than 4/5 is because have a proven track record of not being able to identify value that short.
