Don’t usually like going against the in form trainer, but Hugo Palmer’s Short Squeeze ran poorly at Meydan last time, hasn’t been seen for a while (presumably something wrong) and more importantly is invariably dropped out the back. Fine in a strongly run race where gaps come, but can’t see the pace being great here. Hint of temperament and am against the enigmatic Gabrial for similar reasons. This is Kodi Bear‘s reappearance, so fitness is a question for him too; but although the Dewhurst 2nd has taken a few knocks – it’s still the best form on offer. Looks the obvious pace angle too and (this being first time at the trip) won’t want to set too good a pace. Should be in the right spot to kick. Other one who isn’t usually very far away is Complicit. Rather Cole was in better form, but can’t have eveything and consistency seems to suggest yard form is less important than it is for many.

This race looks the opposite to Windsor, with a lot of pace. On “form” I’d make That Is The Spirit a value bet if it wasn’t for suspecting he’s best able to dominate. Mattmu races up there, but usually keeps on in good style and trainer in excellent form. Danzero has the best form, head second in a Group 3 at Ascot and won this last year on good-firm. But disappointed on reappearance, can pull when in behind horses and trainer isn’t showing much. So just a saver. Eastern Impact disappointed last time and seems a Newmarket specialist. Watchable ran reasonably well at Royal Ascot and although sometimes up with the pace is one that does not need to.

54 points @ 6/1 (L) Waady* (min 5/1)Meccas Angel is the best racehorse in this race, but she has a penalty. Non-runner at Royal Ascot because of the ground and the showers around are far from certain to hit Sandown. Waady is improving, goes well on good-firm and has three wins at the track. Probably needs luck in running coming from the back. But with Cotai Glory, Iffranesia, Stepper Point, Meadway and Justineo in the declatations – there’ll probably be enough pace in the race to find a way through.
Of the others: Medicean Man seems an Ascot specialist, Kingsgate Native inconsistent, Maarek’s best seems with some give. Salt Island ran really well at Ascot, needs to step up agiain over a new (shorter) trip. Moviesta and Stepper Point need to return to last year’s best.
