Forward move by Craig Williams mid-race to get nearer the rail did not help Softie. Though you’re right, may be that was neccessitated by the draw. For the second year running Mount Athos did best of those racing around him. In 2012 best of those held up in a slowly run race, 2013 best of those ridden prominently in a strongly run race… However, I also thought Fiorente won with a little more in hand than distances suggest and runner-up Red Cadeaux came from just as bad a draw. So doubt if it made the difference between Mount Athos winning and losing. Suspect he’ll go up a few pounds now, so might have missed his chance to win the "race that stops a nation".
Siminon also ran well in 4th, thought he was going to win on the turn! But as we know – Hughsie goes further on the bridle than any other jockey and therefore horses find less off it.
Brown Panther did well enough considering he’d gone overly fast early-on and came back with a cut leg.
Dandino might be one for another year. Although the pace helped hold-up horses to a degree, coming from second last off the home straight is asking a lot. Certainly proved my stamina doubts wrong, finishing best of all and might be better than 5th position indicates.
Over in the Breeders Cup, my ante-post bet The Fugue was undone by pace. Went for home too soon off strong fractions, below form in second.
